Discussion Post: Tackling That TBR Pile

tackling that tbr

This is my first discussion post! Yay! Also meaning please bear with me because I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing…..

Being a bookworm or part of the book blogging community you all probably have dreadfully huge TBR (To-Be-Read) piles. A lot of the time our TBR piles can be a source of overwhelming stress due to their sheer size I mean they’re like a black, never-ending abyss of books.

The pressure to finish and read all of these books can be tough sometimes I know I get stressed with my TBR. It definitely feels like you’ll never get half the books you put onto your TBR read, doesn’t it? Plus there are always new books coming out and you’re constantly finding new books to add as well, it’s just a continuous cycle.

I know that my biggest point of stress concerning my TBR is when I’ve bought the books and have yet to touch them let alone read them. I mean I spent money on those things and they’re just sitting there! It’s like I went and put $20 piles on a shelf and left it there untouched! Then when new books come out I tell myself I can’t buy any because I still have all of these other books I did buy that need to be read before spending more money.

Also for those of you who have them, ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies) on your TBR can add some stress. Normally with ARCs you have a deadline (the release date) to read and review them and this can either hurt or help you. Having a deadline will help you read more and knock some of those books of your TBR but as I’m sure you all know sometimes a deadline makes you feel rushed and panicky.

So just how do we deal with those TBR piles and the stress they sometimes cause?

Firstly I think we should all take a deep breath and relax because you’re always going to have a large pile of books to be read, it’s just how we bookworms are. There isn’t ever going to be any getting ahead but you can get your TBR under control, there is hope!

One thing you can do to tackle your TBR is to pick out a couple books that have been sitting on your shelf and read them (obviously, haha). Leave your newest purchases alone for a while and read some books that have been there waiting a while, they’re probably lonely!

Another way to tackle that TBR (something I do personally) is pick out 3-4 books that you’ve purchased and read them before buying anymore new books. I find this to be pretty helpful (even though I cheat sometimes) but it allows me to finish books I’ve already bought and make room to buy new books! Because we all love getting new books right?

Concerning those of you who have ARCs I think the best advice to handle those is to remember not to over-request. Only request what you really want and only what you have time for because you may get swamped with too many ARCs and have to speed through them leaving you with zero time to enjoy your own books. Also give yourself plenty of time to read the ARCs before their release date, I’ve procrastinated a few times and had to rush through the book to finish!

How do you deal with your TBR pile?

Do you ever get stressed out because of your TBR? Why?

Are any of my tips above something you do to handle it as well?

Do you try balancing your book buying and TBR reading?

I have the same problem with buying too many books but not reading them. I’m trying to lower my TBR by putting myself in a book buying ban. I wouldn’t say I’ve been keeping up with the ban XD but I’m starting to finally lower my TBR. Great discussion post, btw!

Thanks Jessica! I’m really terrible at book buying bans but only if I find really good deals on books. If I see a book or ebook for $2.99 or something I will have to buy it! You’ve definitely got it figured out though: buying less books=smaller TBR haha 🙂

Same!! My ARC’s are finally down to two that I have to read before the end of June but I’m almost finished with one of them already. I have authors requesting me to review their books as well, so I’ve been scrambling to read those plus the ones on my shelf. I’m trying to scramble at this point in time. The tip I would do is to read the books I’ve had on my shelf the longest then work my way up.

I’m happy to say I finished my ARCs for now so no more rushing haha. I love that tip though that’s solid advice and I try to read my “oldest” books first although it’s super tempting to read my new ones…. 🙂

I don’t really mind having a huge physical TBR. It just means I have loads of books to choose from when it comes to starting a new book, so I have one for every mood 😀 I tend to get more stressed by the books I can’t buy yet that are on my TBR. I want them in my collection immediately and I’m such an impatient person. Though to handle that I just tell myself that I have plenty to choose from on my shelves, and the books will still be there when I can actually buy them!

Oh boy I wish I thought like you, haha. Seriously I wish my huge physical TBR didn’t bother me but it does I mean it practically stares at me. I definitely agree though I do love having a big selection myself (I’m a hardcore mood reader). I’m impatient too I hate seeing a book I really want that doesn’t come out for months! Telling yourself you have enough to pick from on your shelves is a great tip though, very calming. 🙂

    Great post!

I have a serious problem when it comes to adding books to my TBR. I’m obsessed with scouring Goodreads for all the books I can get my hands on – someone needs to ban me, haha! I like having a huge TBR pile because I’m an extremely distracted person who has no focus so I need to have a ton of things to choose from, but then it also can be overwhelming because I want to read EVERYTHING and I can’t. I also have a really bad habit of buying books and then they just sit their on my shelf unopened for like a year, it’s so bad haha.

I’m mostly a mood reader so I just try to go with whatever I’m feeling and not stress about it too much.

I’m a mood reader as well so that’s where my large TBR comes in handy but as you said it overwhelms me because I want to read everything all at once! My only problem is having too many books that I spent money on sitting there…..so it’s not just you haha! I do love adding new books all the time but I then I get distracted from the hundreds of others that have been waiting longer! 🙂

Haha, yes, exactly! Some of the books on my shelves have been sitting there for like 2 years… maybe more 🙈 I really need to put myself on a book buying ban simply to start reading the books I actually own. I’m just so weak when it comes to trying to resist, haha.

I have some that have been sitting for 2 years and probably later as well so it’s not just you! I try and put myself on bans in order to read the older ones too but it never works…..haha 🙂

    Great first post, Heather 😊
My owned books on my TBR aren’t that huge at the moment so I’m not really stressed about reading them. I don’t usually get stressed out by my TBR because it just means I have lots of books to choose from. 🙌 I’ve also never been on a book buying ban, because just like you I absolutely love a good deal. Besides I have to work with my student budget so some months I can’t afford to go crazy 🙈

Thanks Michelle and thank you for participating! 🙂
I’m glad you can’t resist good book deals either, I’m absolutely awful I tell myself “No more” but when I see stuff for $5 and under how can I pass that up? I usually get stressed out when new books come out and I want them and everyone asks “did you read those other ones you bought last month?” then it’s like a guilt trip because I usually don’t finish them ALL right away…..

I’m honestly actually really good about reading books shortly after I buy them (if possible)- I just HATE seeing all of my unread books pile up. But unfortunately, I have quite a large collection of books in my TBR pile at the moment due to school!
I blame BookOutlet for my having no control when it comes to buying books- the books are just so affordable that I can’t help myself hahah!

I definitely hate seeing all of my unread books as well but I wish I was a good as you at getting them read right away though! I use Book Outlet too! It’s literally my entire problem when it comes to buying too many books because they do have such good deals! 🙂
