Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Picked Up On A Whim

Top Ten Tuesday(9)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

This week’s theme is books we picked up on a whim whether it was because of the cover or the description, whatever! I know we all probably have a few of these I know I do because I’m a sucker for pretty covers.

You can click each of the titles for my review of the book (if I have one). I’ll also link each book cover to its Goodreads page if you want to read the descriptions and check them out!

10.) The Martian by Andy Weir

So I pretty much just bought this book because the movie was coming out at the time and EVERYBODY was talking about it! Was it worth it? Yes it was.

9.) The Killing Jar by Jennifer Bosworth

I got an ARC of this book via Netgalley simply because I thought the cover was pretty intense (I have a terrible phobia of butterflies and moths FYI) and the description sounded….interesting. It’s definitely a very odd book but overall enjoyable.

8.) Blood, Ink, & Fire by Ashley Mansour

Once again an ARC I received via Netgalley and one I got solely based on a pretty cover and an interesting description. It’s about a world without books, how does that not sound cool? Unfortunately, this book was a mess and I didn’t enjoy any of it.

7.) Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

I found this in the bargain section of a bookstore and it was only $2.00, how can I pass that up? It had a very enticing description so I picked it up and it was a pretty amazing book I read the entire trilogy shortly after! I unfortunately read this a loooong time ago and never reviewed it but it’s worth checking out.

6.) I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

Okay a book titled “I Hunt Killers”? That earned it the chance to at least be picked up and have its description read and then that’s all it took to hook me. The entire series is exhilarating and fast paced, I highly recommend checking it out since it was such fun to read through.

5.) The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco

So I did vaguely hear of this book before picking it up and saw a couple negative reviews for it. However, when I saw it sitting on a shelf with “creepy books for Halloween” at Barnes & Noble I couldn’t resist buying it. I loooove creepy books and YA horror books are kind of rare. I really enjoyed having the crap scared out of me with this one!

4.) Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

Four words for you on this one: Peter Pan, Captain Hook. Done. That is me being sold, I loooove Peter Pan so getting my hands on retellings is my number one priority. Well not really but I want you to understand how much I love Peter Pan retellings. That’s all it took to sell me on this book but unfortunately it didn’t blow me away, hopefully I’ll get a review up soon!

3.) Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry

I bought and read this a looooong time ago, well I shouldn’t say I bought it since my grandmother bought it for me when I was younger. Yep browsing through Borders during there going out of business sale (still mad about that) and I could pick ONE book and this is the one a picked. Because of zombies. I like zombies. You should have seen the look on my grandma’s face when I brought this up for her to pay for. Priceless.

2.) The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich

I loved the creepy cover and I’m a sucker for any kind of YA horror so of course I got this on a whim at the bookstore after taking one look at it. It is creepy and a pretty decent book.

1.) The Merciless by Danielle Vega

This is my ultimate book picked on a whim. I was browsing Barnes & Noble and saw out of the corner of my eye this hot pink hardcover with a pentagram on it, so of course I went and picked it up. Teenage girls performing an exorcism? Yep I went and bought the shit out of this book. I loved how gory and horrific it was, it had a very slasher-style to it.

Have you read any of these books?

Did you add or have any on your TBR already?

What books did you pick up on a whim?

Also feel free to leave a link to your TTT!

I got The Martian for the same reason! I just kept hearing about it and then I saw how beautiful the book is and decided to get it. Best decision ever! I ended up loving it. ❤

I know right? I love that cover. It really is an amazing book and I loved it too (I just didn’t love the math because I’m terrible at math haha)! 🙂

The cover is really beautiful! Hahaha XD I didn’t mind the math, I’m actually quite good at it (or I was when I had to do it) though I don’t live it very much.

Well I’m jealous haha because that math was flying right over my head. 🙂
        I skimmed it, I’m terrible.

The Dead House definitely has a unique format, much like Illuminae. It was one of the major pluses for me as well! 🙂

I came across a copy of The Merciless at Target a few weeks ago. There was only one copy, and I snatched it up because I’ve heard you talk about it a few times! I need to get to it soon after I get through all the books I scored at BookCon. Every time I hear you describe it I get more and more interested!

Well I hope I’m not hyping it up too much to the point where you may not like it! Ah! I hope you really love it when you get time to read it, I’ll be nervous until then haha 🙂

Oh totally not! I love sci-fi and have been DYING to read this since it came out. It was just a matter of getting the push to splurge on the gorgeous hardback! But, I finally bought a copy yesterday at Target, so I will be getting to is ASAP! I can’t wait 😀

Heeey, Leviathan! I haven’t seen that cover before but I quite liked the story. I feel like it’s more of a MG story than YA, though.

I know I see the main cover a lot more than I see this one (which is the one I have) with the awkward face on it haha. I read it when I was younger so I’m not sure about how much I’d enjoy it now because it definitely is more of a MG series. 🙂

Ooh so many of these are on my TBR. I totally checked out The Merciless because of the cover too, haha. I’m so glad I did because I loved it! I also started reading The Martian, but then I put it on hold because life got in the way. I really need to pick it back up though because I was enjoying it so much!

Right? The Merciless is the one book for me that judging a book by its cover worked out for me haha. I really pushed myself to finish The Martian as quickly as possible because I was going to see the movie, but I hope you get back to it because it’s a pretty great book! 🙂

The Martian is brilliant! There was so much hype about it on Tumblr that I had to read it to understand what everyone was going on about – so glad I did. It was one of those books that once I had finished it, I wanted to read it again.

I never did finish the Leviathan series though…

Yes thankfully The Martian is a book that the hype doesn’t ruin and it definitely lives up to expectations! I think one of the few reasons I finished the Leviathan series was because I was younger when I read it and it’s more of a MG series than YA. 🙂

I rarely pick up books on a whim! I always need to read the reviews first to see if its any good! But a friend of mine recommended me the Martian a while ago and ever since then I’ve been wanting to read it but haven’t had the chance to. I know I need to read it at some point this year XD I’ve read I Hunt Killers! That was a pretty good YA mystery but I was a bit disappointed by the 2nd book.

I try not to pick too many up on a whim because, like you, I read a few reviews and do my “research”. I Hunt Killers is pretty great, I don’t know too may people that have read it so I’m glad to see you have! I think the first one is the best because the other two just weren’t as great. I also hope you enjoy The Martian when you get to it! 🙂
