This week’s topic is unlikable characters but they can’t be villains! So basically any main characters or secondary characters you found annoying or just ya know…unlikable.
Please note that these are my own opinions and I don’t mean to offend anyone who does like the characters I mention!
5.) Celaena Sardothien (Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas)
While Celaena isn’t the most unlikable character I’ve come across she still can contend in my top 5. My biggest problem with this character is that she is made out to be the kingdom’s most badass assassin and it just does not show at all, she spends far more time concerned about her cleanliness, clothes, and boys. Where was the badass-ness I was promised? I just found her to be really…annoying.
I feel scared because this is such a popular series but…
I’m basing this only off of book one since I have not read the entire series, let me know if she gets better later in the series!

4.) Zoe Redbird (House of Night Series by P.C. & Kristin Cast)
How did I manage to read so many of these books? They were pretty bad in my opinion and all of the characters were pretty intolerable. Zoe Redbird is the main character and pretty much all she cares about is…you guessed it, boys. Basically you have a bunch of sex-crazed, annoying teenagers and Zoe is at their front.
3.) Alina Starkov (Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo)
Alina is probably the most special of snowflakes and it was annoying as hell. Not to mention the fact that she spends pretty much all of her time hating how attractive all of the other Grisha are compared to herself, because she’s “so plain and boring”. Almost every decision she made felt idiotic and it irritated me. All of that, for me, made for a very unlikable character.

2.) Jace Wayland (City of Bones by Cassandra Clare)
This was actually pretty much a toss up between him and Clary, I find them both equally annoying but Jace won out. I found him to be too narcissistic and he was more or less a douchebag. Sorry but this guy was way too annoying for me!

I agree with the zoe redbird one. the funny thing is i was just looking at my house of night books on my bookshelf and thinking why in the world did i buy all these.

Thanks! I do the same thing with my HoN books all the time and so I finally put other books over them so I didn’t have to see them anymore, haha. 🙂

Okay. Totally unrelated to what this post is about, but your gif of Drake&Josh made me seriously want to re-watch some of the episodes. XD (I guess I’m going to have to do it now that I have mentioned it.)
I agree with you on both Jace and Clary, they annoyed me quiet a lot as well. (Though I have only read the first book so far.) And no, you don’t have to explain Bella – I don’t think anyone actually likes her.

I only read the first book in TMI as well and they bugged me so much I just have better things to read then try to give the series another go
Haha, I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels they don’t need to explain Bella. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say they like her so, haha. 🙂

I do plan to continue with the series…I simply want to read about Magnus Bane, as he is one of my favourite characters of all time! 😀 And I have heard that the books do get better, so I’m hoping for that.
But I do agree, it’s not really a priority – there are A TON of books out there that I’m more interested in!

Celaena does improve. In the next book you can see more of the assassin if you plan on reading it (although she does kind of become more of a “special snowflake”.) Currently I’m in the middle of the Grisha trilogy, so I can see where you’re coming from with Alina–I kind of just feel indifferent toward her.

I also think I’ll eventually continue with the rest of the Grisha books as well although I have zero hopes of liking Alina anymore. 🙂

Haha!! I love this post 😂😂 I haven’t read TOG yet but I really think I’ll feel the same way about Celaena when I do, haha. I’ve only read City of Bones but Jace and Clary both drove me crazy lmao.

I feel like if Jace and Clary drove you crazy (like me) you probably won’t end up liking Celaena
but I feel like if we can all get past the first book maybe we’ll get the hype later 🙂

I’m surprised (pleasantly) to see Celaena here! I also didn’t like her, but I’m under the impression that most people do, haha. Like you, I found her too focused on cleanliness, clothes, and boys, and I also didn’t like how everyone just falls in love with her and how everyone thinks she’s super beautiful. I dunno – there comes a point all the repetition becomes a bit much.

I get what you mean about Celaena! When I went into the book, I had read plenty of negative reviews that said that she’s not the bad-ass the fandom promises she is, so I went into it expecting a human rather than a bad-ass assassin. Which I got. I really enjoyed her vulnerabilities and her strengths, but I agree- she’s mostly talk rather than actions. XD
Jace and Clary would have made it onto my list too if it was a little longer. They don’t have personalities, ha. They felt like caricatures of tropes rather than characters. I much preferred the secondary characters in that series.

I think that may be what part of my problem was with her, because I went in thinking she was going to be a deadly assassin and that isn’t what I got. I think I’m going to give the series another shot though!
I had a hard time picking between Jace and Clary, I should have put both on, but I agree they lack personality and just feel like wet mop characters. 🙂

Yay to Celaena being on this list!! 😀 She’s on my list too! I didn’t like her for a different reason though. I thought the author focused too much on what other people in the book thought of her, not showing us that she really was this notorious assassin everyone said she is.

YES! I’m so glad it wasn’t just me! I feel like a lot of people love the series and her so I was feeling in the minority. I agree, there definitely was not enough showing in the book and a whole lot of telling! 🙂

I find Jace’s giant ego to be extremely entertaining to read, but I would never in a thousand years put up with someone like that in real life, let alone date them. You see more of Celaena’s butt-kicking assassin side in the Assassin’s Blade prequel novellas, if you’re interested in giving her another chance.

Good to hear! I was disappointed I didn’t like Throne of Glass more, I’m definitely interested in giving it another go though. Would you recommend reading the prequel novellas before continuing to Crown of Midnight or after reading the rest of the actual books? 🙂

Sorry it’s been a couple of days! Personally, I’d recommend reading the novellas right before Queen of Shadows. A lot of the characters and events from the novellas come back into play or are strongly referenced in Shadows, but not really in the two books before that. That’s the way I unintentionally did it, and it was nice to have her prequel history fresh in my mind as it was being addressed in Shadows.
