Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite First Sentences

Top Ten Tuesday(1)

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes and created by Lainey @ Ginger Reads Lainey. You can check out the group’s Goodreads page for this month’s topics!

This week’s theme is favorite first sentences! It was actually a little harder for me to pick these since it has to be the first sentence and not ANY sentence. I found that  don’t like too many of the first sentences in books, they really have to grab my attention for them to stand out.

5.) “So here’s the file that almost killed me, Director”

– Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

I don’t really know why this is a favorite of mine but I think it’s humorous as well as really attention grabbing! WHY did this file almost kill you? Tell me! Must read more! I’m a sucker for these sentences that hook you right away.

4.) ” Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley.”

-Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Uprooted

Like I said, I love attention grabbing first sentences!

3.) “Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well”

-Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1)

I know this one is kind of cheating since it’s technically two sentences and also is in the, sort of, preface and not chapter 1 but hey I really like it and it kind of works!

2.) “The first thing you find out when yer dog learns to talk is that dogs don’t got nothing much to say.”

-The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1)

One of my favorite books and who doesn’t love a sentence that includes talking dogs?

1.) “People often shit themselves when they die”

-Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)

Hands down the BEST first sentence in a book ever! I mean it really grabs you because it’s just so….bold. I love it!

These are AMAZING picks for this week’s topic. The opening of Nevernight was amazing, it definitely grabbed me from the first page, and the same with Illuminae and Daughter of Smoke and Bone as well, I was hooked from the very first sentences!
I haven’t read Uprooted yet but it’s on my to-read list and I’ve heard great things about it and can’t wait to get started on it, same with The Knife of Never Letting Go as well!
    Great picks again! 😀

      Thank you!
Glad you liked my picks, I just had to put Nevernight’s as #1 because it’s definitely the most unique opening sentence, haha.
I have yet to really hear about anyone not liking Uprooted so I hope you enjoy that one and yes the same goes for The Knife of Never Letting Go! I’ll be patiently awaiting your reviews when you get a chance to read both of them! 🙂

Oh I agree, I was hooked from the beginning of that book! 🙂
Same here actually, I haven’t been on the lookout for negative reviews or anything for either book but very few people have mentioned not enjoying these books! Thanks they’re both on my October TBR list so I should be getting around to them soon! 😀

These are all fantastic choices! That first sentence for Nevernight is making me even more excited to read it now! Haha! I absolutely HAVE to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone soon. The little excerpts of Laini Taylor’s writing that I’ve read are so gorgeous. She’s such a fantastic writer. I also desperately need to start the Chaos Walking trilogy because, not only Patrick Ness, but talking dogs!! 😀

Nevernight’s is probably my all time favorite first sentence now, haha! I hope you read it because it’s amazing and since we have similar tastes I’m sure you’ll love it!
And Laini Taylor is amazing! Definitely in my top favorite writers for sure, she just writes so beautifully so I hope you read one of her books I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I would also say the talking dog is my favorite part of The Knife of Never Letting Go…..if you were to ask me to describe what I loved about that book with one sentence I would simply say “Talking dogs.” haha 🙂

That first line for Uprooted just convinced me to immediately reserve it from my library, thank you! Definitely attention-grabbing. 😛

Also it’s totally weird but I don’t think that was the first sentence in my copy of Nevernight. I don’t have it with me right now, but it was a flashback scene… D:

Yay! It’s a great book so I hope you enjoy it and yes I love how attention grabbing that first sentence is!
Really? That seems odd. I loved this sentence in Nevernight because it’s definitely unique and I just couldn’t help putting it as #1 on this list. 🙂

No, you’re right – it was in the prologue! I just somehow completely forgot about that page (and likely skipped it HAHA). Oops. 😀

Oh, Jay has a sense of humor. I love that sentence in both Illuminae and Nevernight. I love others as well. I need to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.
