Top 5 Wednesday: Books That Took Me The Longest To Finish

Top Ten Tuesday(1)

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes and created by Lainey @ Ginger Reads Lainey. You can check out the group’s Goodreads page for this month’s topics!

This week’s theme is books that took us the longest to read! I don’t know about you guys but I always feel like I read a lot slower than I actually do so here I was thinking this would be easy but apparently that was not the case. I thought I took WEEKS or even a month to finish certain books when in reality it may have been a week or a week and a half but at the time it felt like forever. So I don’t read as horrendously slow as I thought I did and that’s a relief.

I also wanted to pick some books that have been sitting on my shelves forever that I finally read and ran into a problem with that….which is I haven’t read many of the books that have been sitting there forever. Whoops.

So here are some of the most recent reads that took me longer than  usual to push through! Enjoy!

5.) These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly

This only took me a few days to actually read but it FELT like forever, honestly if you asked me how long it took me to finish this book I’d have to say a few weeks when in reality it didn’t. Usually I’m not one to complain about page number but when you’re bored out of your mind then 488 pages feels like a lot.

In the end the pacing was slow and the book was too long for me, but that’s just my opinion!

4.) Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Reading “Throne of Glass” was not only a slow process for me but also a bit painful, I don’t understand the hype with this book and series. BUT before anyone lynches me I’m willing to give the sequel a try to see if it gets better!

The first time I tried reading this book I got 20% in and set it down to read something else because it just wasn’t that interesting to me. So the second time I picked it back up it took me 3 weeks to finish which is a long time for me personally.

3.) Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

Firstly I’d like to say I LOVED this book, OK? So why exactly did it take me a little over a month to finish this bad boy you may ask? Well it’s a damn hard book to zip through in my opinion because: 1.) It’s long 2.) The pacing is a little slow to start off 3.) There’s A LOT of information to grasp. It’s definitely worth it to push through the beginning though, trust me it’s such an amazing book…it just might take you a while….

2.) A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin

Do I need to even explain why this took me so long? It’s 1,125 pages and I mean come on it’s a fantasy book so there’s A LOT of stuff going on to keep track of. I picked this baby up a handful of times and kept setting it back down until I finally managed to push through it and now I have epic bragging rights!

1.) Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Once I actually started this lovely book I could not put it down and finished it in a jiffy. So why is it #1 on this list? Because it sat unread on my Nook for about 3-4 years. YEARS. I just never got around to it and once I joined the book blogging community I saw how much love it got as well as how much everyone loved Laini Taylor period. This is a book I should have read sooner and it’s worth all the hype for sure!

Interesting post! Haha, yes, for getting through a George R. R. Martin book you definitely get bragging rights. I can’t say of earned those yet. As for a book that seemed to take forever to get through, I’d have to say Six of Crows. Not that I didn’t love the world and characters, but that book had so many words, far more per page than the average book. For some reason I felt like it took forever to finish.

I know how that goes where the book is good or decent but for some reason it just FEELS like it’s taking forever, there’s a few books that were like that for me as well!

Nevernight. I want more already and I haven’t finished it! LOL It took me a while to truly understand the world, the words, and the history. I have notes that I wrote down to remind myself so that’s why it’s taking me a while to read.

Throne of Glass. I have heard a mixture of both positive and negative about this series. I’ve heard it gets better but with the recent release, Empire of Storms, I have heard really negative things about it but there are positive things as well. So I’m hesitant to read these books.

Nevernight does take some time but it is ultimately worth it and there’s so much detail, I love detail haha! Taking notes is a very good idea it helps keep track of the many things going on, I know I took notes when I was reading the Song of Ice and Fire series.
I’m a little hesitant about reading the rest of the Throne of Glass series since I didn’t really like the first book but everyone says it gets better so I’m willing to read the second book and see for myself. 🙂

Yes, it does! Especially with new words like ‘turns’. It took me a while to figure out what ‘turns’ means! I was hoping to find a glossary that people would post to help us to remember the new words or words that means totally different in the book!

I am not sure about reading the Song of Ice and Fire series. I am never interested in watching the show either. We’ll see when the mood strikes.

I heard really mixed reviews on the latest book on the Throne of Glass series but why not check out the book from a library and see?

Yes I’m not sure why there wasn’t a glossary included since in his other book “Stormdancer” there was one.
And with the Throne of Glass sequel that’s exactly what I’ll do, borrow from the library so if I don’t like it it’s no money wasted haha 🙂

Maybe I can ask Jay if he is more than willing to release a glossary book for Nevernight?

Exactly. I am planning on doing that once I am all settled down.

Thank you! Glad it isn’t just me I hate that feeling I don’t like “dragging my feet” through books. :/

Daughter of Smoke and Bone has been sat on my bookshelf for the past few months and I am still yet to pick it up! To be fair my university reading is kicking my butt at the moment but I need to get to it so bad. I definitely will have to get to it faster than your 3-4 year mark!

Yes please do get to it faster than that it is such a wonderful book and it doesn’t deserve to be put off as long as I did haha! When you finally get a chance to read it I hope you enjoy it and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it! 🙂

Queen of Shadows from ToG took me literally half a year to finish😂I kept getting caught up with other books in the middle

I’ve been meaning to read Nevernight for the longest time–perhaps it’s my Daughter of Smoke and Bone😂

    Lovely post!😊
