Books I Just HAD To Have…..& Still Haven’t Read

Top Ten Tuesday(70)

The other day I was looking at my bookshelves and noticing all of the books I’ve bought under the delusion that I could NOT wait and HAD to have them right away……and then still haven’t read them.

This makes me wonder sometimes if I’m actually nuts or not because why do I torture myself like this? Plus everyone always tells me “hey remember when you bought all those books and still haven’t read them? You don’t need more until you read those.” which they’re sort of right….

So I thought that it would be a great idea to share what a horrible reader/book hoarder I am with you all!

Basically this is me:

And then after not reading any of them:

I’ll be putting these in order of how long I’ve actually had these sitting around my house starting with the newest additions!

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

Of course with all of the hype that was surrounding this book before and after it’s May release date I had to get my hands on it! Most of the time I don’t give into the hype, or at least I like to think so, I just thought everything about this book sounded wonderful: diverse characters and culture, a cute cover, and non-stop glowing reviews!

Then obviously I couldn’t wait to get a copy and then it arrived and now it’s just sitting all lonely on my shelf because I’m a terrible person…….

Bad Romance by Heather Demetrios

I actually ordered this with “When Dimple Met Rishi” because once again I could not wait and just haaaad to have a copy right away! The cover is absolutely gorgeous and I’ve seen great reviews for it, plus I think it will be interesting to read about a dysfunctional relationship in a YA setting. I know that makes me sound weird but it’s nice to see unique books and books bringing attention to abuse like this (because it happens).

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

If I was going to rate all of these books by which book I was literally dying to have “Strange the Dreamer” would be #1 because I seriously acted like I was going to die without this book in my life. I even went to the trouble of ordering a UK edition as well because I HAD TO HAVE THIS BOOK AND LAINI TAYLOR IS LIFE!

And guess where the book is sitting? On my shelf. Unread.

The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

I was super pumped for this book before it came out and then with all of the great reviews afterwards I was even more excited for it. Female gladiator! That’s all I want in my books so when I was in the bookstore and saw it I decided to splurge and buy it right then and there because I NEEDED IT. Now it’s been sitting on my shelf for a few months……

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza

I bought this book along with my spontanous purchase of “The Valiant” as well. You can see where this got me.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

When I saw this book come out at first I was like: Norse Mythology?! Told by Neil Gaiman?! I MUST HAVE THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY! So I kind of started it and then slowly it worked its way back onto my shelf where it is still sitting waiting to be finished.

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

Everyone, everyone, everyone recommends reading this series and I saw the box set on sale on Book Outlet for about $12.00 so of course I was all “Hell yeah!” and bought it right away. Soooooooooo it’s all sitting on my shelf still unread where it will probably remain for a while.

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

This was a spontaneous buy I got with birthday money last year and I decided to use that money for this book because once again…..I couldn’t resist. It’s even a shorter book and I STILL haven’t gotten to it!

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

I asked for this one for my birthday last year because I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted it and so then I actually received it for my birthday…….and haven’t read it yet.

The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoski

After reading the first book “The Winner’s Curse” I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it after how much I was expecting not to enjoy it. So then after devouring the sequel as well I NEEDED to read the last book that was just released last year! And guess who still hasn’t finished that trilogy even after buying the last book? Me.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

This book was super, duper hyped last year and because of that plus the pretty cover and promise of unique mythology I was 100% sold. I saw it when I happened to visit a Barnes & Noble and instantly bought it and now it’s been sitting on my shelf for over a year still unread.

Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas

This one hasn’t been a new release for a while but I found while reading a bunch of glowing reviews for it and having it recommended a ton. So I found it on Book Outlet and bought it straight away because I love twisted thrillers! I started reading it…..and then set it aside for some reason…..and it’s been sitting there waiting for me to return to it eventually.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

This book is the one I’ve had the longest on this list because back many, many years ago when I was binge reading the Percy Jackson series and finished it and was DYING for more! So I found the Heroes of Olympus series and bought the first book straight away…….it has been sitting on my old Nook Color for ages and honestly it probably won’t get read because I want physical copies now….awkward.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them?

Do you have any of these on your TBR as well?

Did you buy any of these right away and haven’t read them yet either?

Do you buy books and let them sit for a long time?

What are some books you HAD to have and haven’t read yet?

Let me know in the comments!

Haha – that giphy just about sums up the struggling book addict’s life in a nutshell 😀
Same here, I have a serious addiction to book buying, expecting myself to read the novels as soon as I buy them. This happened to me with When Dimple Met Rishi just because I wanted to be part of the discussion circulating all over here and Goodreads. I still have yet to read The Hate U Giv and The Shades of Magic trilogy due to all the ARCs I still need to catch up, but I definitely feel for ya 😀

Haha thank you! I thought the gifs suited this well!
I wish I could convince myself that I actually will read the books right when I buy them! I did the same thing with When Dimple Met Rishi and now I don’t know when I’ll get to it at all!
I really hope you enjoy The Hate U Give and The Shadows of Magic trilogy! I enjoyed both of those so much! 🙂

Oh girl, I’m too embarrassed to even go through all of the books on my shelves that I’ve done that with. I can confirm that Norse Mythology is one of them though! So you’re not alone there, haha!

I’ve got way more than just these too, haha! I just love books so I can’t help myself! The only time I really get embarrassed is when someone confronts me and says something like “do you really need more books? Have you read any of these yet?” and then I feel a little guilty too.
I feel like I should be reading Norse Mythology a bit at a time since it’s stories and not a full blown book with just one story, maybe I will do that but good to know I’m not the only one who hasn’t read it yet! 🙂

Hahahaha I get asked the same question too! I have an entire 7 shelf bookcase dedicated to my TBR, and every shelve is full. 😂🙈

Yeah, it’s really easy to get through. It took me only 2 hours to read the whole thing!

Uhm… I have more than three bookshelves dedicated to TBR in my house.. so you are not alone. In my defense… I uhm buy them on clearance or on super sale or at the library sales. So they are like less than 3 dollars! but still it’s getting a little out of hand. ….

Thank goodness it isn’t just me! Most of my two bookshelves are all TBR plus the overflow that won’t fit on the shelves! I buy a ton of my books on sale as well mostly on Book Outlet, I mean how do you say no to that cheap of books?! But yes my is getting a little out of hand as well…..

Oh yes I had to have my husband add TBR shelves and he just shrugs and adds more 😊 I buy most of my books at library sales and such so they are like less than a dollar! How can I say no?!?

I’m new to book blogging so I haven’t had this happen to me much, especially as I don’t have much money so exercise quite a reasonable amount of caution. However, I definitely grabbed a few books based on excitement/hype in general that are still waiting to be read like I’ll Give you the Sun and basically anything I’ve ever bought in the kindle sale. It’s so easy to accumulate good books, but actually quite hard to find enough time to read them!
Also, just on a side note but could you possibly change this “This makes me wonder sometimes if I’m actually nuts or not because why do I torture myself like this?” b/c its actually pretty awful and off-putting D:

One of the unwritten rules of blogging is that you don’t ask someone to change what they wrote in THEIR own blog post, it’s off putting.

I’m asking them to remove it due to their use of the word “nuts” and the equation with violence. So actually yes, I can ask someone if it’s okay for them to remove something ableist from their post.

I’m not sure what planet you appear to live in, but we actually live in a world where if someone has said something which is ill-worded then you can ask them to change it or remove it so that it a no longer a problem.

Please don’t jump down my throat and try to be clever without actually understanding what is happening here.

Hey there! I’m very sorry you were offended by my statement in my post here because it was not my intention at all to come off as poking fun at anyone with mental illness since I do actually suffer from anxiety myself. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and expressing how you feel!

This was simply meant to be my way of joking around with my book buying habits with my own sense of humor and I’m sorry it came off offensively .I of course will keep this in mind when writing my posts up in the future and try to be more aware of my words and statements!

However, I feel that if I change things in my posts then it may bring other people to ask me to change things they do not like such as changing my opinion on a book.

As I said though I will definitely be more aware of how I say things and how they may affect others!

      Thank you!

Ha, this is the story of my life. I don’t feel so bad knowing you have just as many unread books as I do! 😛 I recently just bought the whole Dark Tower series by Stephen King, but who knows wheeeeen I’m going to read it. Just thinking about all the books is making me anxious :\

We all have to stick together, haha! It’s good to know we all aren’t the only ones who buy a bunch of books and then leave them unread!
I would be anxious too because most of Stephen King’s books are pretty intimidating let alone a whole series! Good luck though! 🙂

Let me join you in the Box of Shame because I have a lot of these and more on my ‘bought and never read’ list.

I have read ‘The Star-Touched Queen’ though, and it wasn’t bad. The writing had some really lovely moments, but there’s not a lot of plot and it has a lot of focus on the romance. So it may be a bit hit or miss, but the cover and writing are pretty lol

Of course, there’s always room in the Box of Shame because it’s good to know it isn’t that lonely! haha

I have heard the writing is excellent in The Star-Touched Queen which is great since I’m a sucker for purple prose. Kind of sad to hear it’s more romance-focused than the plot since that’s usually a pet peeve of mine but hopefully I’ll still be able to enjoy it! 🙂

Mistborn is worth every page! I do recommend the audio books if those help as well. I’ve got around 30-40 books on my shelf that I still haven’t read…I’m bad lol

Good to hear! There’s so much hype around them but I’m not worried in the least since I’m a big fantasy lover so I just KNOW I’ll love it! I actually have yet to try audio books but I probably should really look into them since it might be a good way for me to get through more books. 🙂

I definitely do this a lot!!! Although I’ve stopped a lot this year because money 😩😂 I definitely recommend Strange the Dreamer and Dangerous Girls though! I stayed up all night reading Dangerous Girls. There was definitely some predictable moments, but overall it’s one of the better thrillers I’ve read. I still need to read Crooked Kingdom too! I keep putting it off.

I’ve been getting a lot better about this recently as well for the same money reason, haha, so I only buy them if they’re like $0.99 on my Kindle or if they are books that I am almost 100% positive I will enjoy and would like to have physically.
I think I need to just sit myself down with Dangerous Girls because I know once I get into it I’ll probably not be able to put it down either, I honestly have yet to hear one bad thing about that book!
I put so many books off for no good reason! 🙂

I’m in the same boat as you. Didn’t like Vassa though. So you can prob put that one off still. Haven’t read Strange either even though I was the same as you…and The Valiant wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. So you’re not missing out on Valiant and Vassa (maybe it’s the “V” books, lol!)

Vassa seems a little iffy I’m not sure if I’ll like it or not which is probably why I have put it off for so long sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy that one though or The Valiant. Maybe it is the “V” books haha! 🙂

I do this all the time!! 😂 So I completely understand. Most of my unread books I got that way – thinking that I can’t wait to get my hands on them and then let them sit on my shelf for months (and some even years). 😂 At least we aren’t alone in this, sooo it makes it a bit better!
Out of those books I have read Norse Mythology, Crooked Kingdom, The Star-Touched Queen and The Lost Hero. I actually enjoyed all of those books, so I’m happy to see that you plan on reading them in the future! 😉 I would recommend you to start with Crooked Kingdom, simply because it’s one of my favourite books.

It’s good not to be alone, haha! It sounds so odd to say “I buy books and then don’t read them for a long time” and that lots of other people do it too haha!
Good to hear you enjoyed all of those books too, I’m pretty positive I’ll enjoy all of the books listed but some are a little iffy. I really should read the Lost Hero but I’m not sure I can afford to get sucked into a series that good at the moment, haha!
I’ll definitely have to be getting to Crooked Kingdom here this fall and especially now that you’ve recommended it too haha! Thanks Anna! 🙂
