Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Top Ten Tuesday (20)

It’s my favorite time: unpopular opinion time! Maybe it’s just me but I really love reading reviews or opinions from people who are breaking the mold with hyped books! I feel that I, personally, am one of those people sometimes since I don’t usually go for super hyped books but then again I do at the same time. It’s fun to see different opinions on popular books!

I saw this tag over on Hannah’s blog Mortal Reader so be sure to head over and check out her beautiful, amazing blog as well!

****Please remember that we are all entitled to our own opinions so if you agree or disagree feel free to discuss in the comments BUT I’d appreciate if there were no “hate” comments towards my opinions or anyone elses’s in the comments!****

A popular book you don’t like?

Image result for the crown's game

I really, really wanted to like this book since it promised a magical fight to the death in a competition to be the czar’s enchanter in a fantasy Russian setting. However, I thought it was really tedious with the over the top love triangle, lack of extravagant magical displays, and the other lack of actual fighting to the death.

It was definitely a hyped book last year and it seems a lot of other people DID enjoy it so it seems I’m a bit in the minority.

You can read my full review of “The Crown’s Game” here!

A book series everyone hates but you love?

Image result for the bone witch

I actually can’t really think of any books people HATE that I did like but “The Bone Witch” is probably the closest thing to it. A TON of people did not enjoy this book and found it to be really boring but I really enjoyed it! It was a bit slower paced but I understood that Chupeco was working up the plot and world building and it was definitely interesting enough to keep me reading. I’m all about those dark magic witches!

You can read my full review of “The Bone Witch” here!

A love triangle where the MC ends up with the person you didn’t want them to?

DON’T HATE ME! I really, really didn’t like Ginny all that much and I really didn’t like that Harry ended up with her. I would have much rather seen Harry end up with Hermione. (basically I go against every love triangle or love interest in books, I always root for the underdog!)

A popular genre you rarely reach for?

Contemporary

I will on occasion pick up contemporary books especially if they’re not mostly romance. However, seeing as a lot of YA contemporaries are romance based I definitely don’t reach for them that much. I will pick them up but only if they have a TON of amazing reviews!

A popular beloved character you didn’t like?

Celaena Sardothien

To be fair I’m only basing this off of just reading “Throne of Glass” but I really didn’t like Celaena at all. She was all talk and no action in my opinion, I wanted to see exactly why she’s the most feared and deadly assassin and yet she spends most of her time mooning over boys, dresses, and shoes.

A popular author you can’t seem to get into?

Cassandra Clare

Not a big fan and unless she writes something outside of her shadowhunter world I probably will continue to not be a big fan. I really didn’t enjoy “City of Bones” at all and if the rest of the series are all similar I won’t be reading those either.

Popular trope you’re tired of seeing?

Love Triangles

Image result for love triangle

I would love to actually see this trope become completely eradicated because I really don’t like it. Is this really an unpopular opinion though? I feel that I see a lot of other people who don’t like love triangles either.

Anyways I just don’t buy into them unless they’re very, very believable or that I genuinely think both options are suitable.

Popular series you have no interest in reading?

Image result for the selection

I just feel like this series doesn’t have anything that interests me, a competition to win over a Prince with lots of dresses? No thanks I’ll pass.

The saying goes “the book is always better than the movie” but what movie do you prefer more than the book?

Image result for the da vinci code

The Da Vinci Code maybe? I don’t usually like anything truly better than the book but this is probably the closest one since the movie follows the book quite closely and I really did like the movie.

I totally agree with you on the whole Ginny and Harry relationship. I honesty hated Ginny for no reason. I just found her annoying in both the book and the movie. I just never liked her and Harry at all.

Thank God someone else agrees with me! I don’t really have a reason for not liking Ginny either…I just didn’t like her and I didn’t like Harry with her. Glad it isn’t just me! 🙂

Glad it isn’t just me! I’m always a little afraid to say something since I might get roasted by people, haha! 🙂
I would have loved if Harry ended up with Luna as well! Pretty much anyone but Ginny!

I’m also happy I’m not the only one who can’t get into Cassandra Clare! I always feel like I’m in the minority there since there’s a big fandom for her books but I just really didn’t like City of Bones. 😦

I love reading people’s answers to this tag!! I totally agree with the over-used love triangle. Just stop already. Also, I feel the same way about contemporary books! I’ve been trying to read more of them, and even found a few that I like, but for the most part they just annoy me. Oh, and I also agree about Cassandra Clare. I just can not get into her writing! I tried to read city of bones but I just couldn’t.
I did love the selection series though. It’s a lot more than just dresses and princes, but at the same time it does have a love triangle, so maybe staying away from it is the best course of action?

Same here! I always find unpopular opinions to be a lot of fun!
Love triangles are definitely over done and I’m tired of seeing it, do something else haha!
I’m just really picky with contemporaries, like you said there’s some good ones out there but a lot of them annoy me as well.
Also glad it isn’t just me with Cassandra Clare because I really didn’t like City of Bones, you didn’t miss out on anything in my opinion there!
The Selection is so iffy because I really don’t like to judge books and stay away from them but also don’t want to read them if they have things in them that I don’t like such as love triangles, haha! So I will probably stay away from that one ! 🙂

Oooh Harry and Hermione hey? I never thought of them getting together, but can definitely see that they could have had a thing. I have no interest in reading the Selection series, pretty much for the same reason as you!!

Awesome tag! I feel like I have done this one a while back but I think I will do it again because I have new books to add to it hahaha.

I would have gone for Harry and Luna too haha. Glad it isn’t just me who has no interest The Selection, I just feel like it’s not for me!

Thanks, I always think reading unpopular opinions is tons of fun so an updated version is always good haha! 🙂

Who didn’t like The Bone Witch?!?! That’s one of my best reads. So good I read it in a flash. Harry and Ginny wasn’t good to me either. I looked at her as just a supporting character, nothing more. I adore Hermonie to the fullest, so I wanted Harry to be with either her or the oh so chill Luna.

I loved The Bone Witch too but when it was released I saw quite a few people didn’t enjoy it because it was too slow. I thought it was fantastic though!
I would have loooooved Harry and Luna or Harry and Hermione, I agree Ginny was more of a minor character so I didn’t really like her with Harry.

I didn’t feel that it was slow really. Seemed more like it was building up for an incredible sequel. Maybe I was just that interested. As soon as I realized she liked Harry, I was like nope. Don’t let this happen, please. It did unfortunately *sheds tear*

I loved the DaVinci Code both the book and movie and how closely the movie followed the book. I haven’t read any of Cassandra Clare’s books yet, and I too am tired of seeing love triangles.

Same, I really like when book to movie adaptations go smoothly like that. Love triangles are getting pretty dang old too…..

Don’t worry about The Selection series, you really aren’t missing much. In fact, Kiera Cass’ work in general isn’t anything to get excited about in my opinion, haha!

Good to know Larkin! I see the covers and descriptions for her books and just don’t get too excited, I’m pretty sure she’s an author that just won’t work for me! 🙂

Yeah, her writing is a little bland and simple for me. I think she might be better suited for middle grade, if she could be more whimsical with her stories.

Heck yes I agree with you on many of these answers. I do need to give “The Bone Witch” another chance since the world and magic were really cool. Great tag 🙂

Thank you and glad you can agree with a few answers here! “The Bone Witch” can get a little slow but like you said the world and magic really are interesting so I pushed through for that! 🙂

Yeah I should’ve pushed through the first time. Darn self lol. Yeah I won’t any Cassie Clare books and Crown’s Game felt like a rip off of the Night Circus to me.

Yaay you did the tag! I loved reading your answers, although you dislike a few of my loves that’s totally OK. Although I am 100% with you on Love Triangles. so so sick of them because they are so overdone. I’m also personally on the fence about The Selection series, I don’t really have this urge to read it but because it’s loved by so many people i’m sort of like ‘Do I give it a try?’ and also the cover kinda makes me want to.

Thanks Hannah! I always feel slightly guilty about my unpopular opinions but at the same time I love reading everyone’s different opinions.
Glad we agree on love triangles though! It’s like “come on guys use some other tropes, anything!”
I’d give The Selection a try if you’re on the fence with it because you never know, it could become a new favorite! I was the same way with “The Winner’s Curse” which is also pretty hyped and ended up loving it! 🙂

YES YES YES YES YES to Harry/Hermione! I didn’t like Ginny at all and tbh Ron is one of my least favorite characters in the series. I thought Hermione deserved someone who recognized how magical and wonderful she was from the beginning, and let’s be honest, Ron was a total jerk to her for ages, meanwhile Harry and she always had a very unique bond between them. In my head canon, Harry and Hermione admitted their feelings for each other shortly after the war and got together and the epilogue never happened please and thank you. 😂😂

YAAASSSS, I’M SO HAPPY YOU AGREE! I always feel like I’m in the minority with not liking who Harry and Hermione ended up with because I didn’t like Ginny or Ron either! I agree Ron didn’t appreciate Hermione for so long and I kind of feel like she should have ended up with someone who would basically treat her like a Queen because she is one, haha! Also I feel Ginny and Harry wasn’t built up at all it was like *boom* suddenly they’re an item and I felt if he was with Hermione there would have been more background and build up there!
I think I’ll join you in your head canon where they got together and the epilogue never happened! I could rant about this forever! 🙂

I love this comment so much! Lmao EVERYTHING that you just said, girl! Harry treated Hermione like the brilliant, brave goddess she was and Ron just… meh. And I totally agree that the Harry/Ginny thing didn’t feel built up to me, either! I remember reading the books as a kid and kind of feeling like, “Uh, what?? Where did this come from?” It felt like a relationship created out of pure convenience. I always joke with my fiance that, if the HP characters were real people, Harry and Ginny would have been that couple that lasted a whopping 3 months after the war ended before realizing that literally the only thing they had in common was freakin’ Ron.

I AGREE WITH SO MANY OF THESE ESPECIALLY HARRY AND GINNY. WHAT EVEN WAS THAT???? It felt like such a cop out. Harry/Hermione were my first ever ship and ~back in the day~ I was super heavily involved in the fandom and was so active when it came to shipping them. Even though I don’t like Ron/Hermione I can kind of see where that came from, but Harry and Ginny??? There was ZERO build up. I would have even preferred Harry ending up with Luna. I could honestly keep talking about this forever 😂 I’m really excited to read The Bone Witch too! I’ve heard it’s a bit slow, which I struggle with, but it sounds so interesting so I’m sure I’ll be able to push through it 😀

I could rant about it forever as well so no worries!
I’m really glad I’m not the only person who didn’t like who both Harry and Hermione ended up with since I always feel like I’m in the minority on that one!
I didn’t like that Ron/Hermione ended up being a thing because I honestly feel like Ron is a little useless and Hermione is one of the most intelligent and powerful characters. But yes they had history so that made sense (but so would her and Harry in that respect) but Ginny and Harry came out of nowhere! There should have been some background there and build up like you said! I pretty much ship Harry with everyone but Ginny haha because I would have loved him and Luna as well but the ultimate ship is Harry/Hermione for me!

I would love to see what you think of The Bone Witch since we both like the darker, horror-ish books! It is pretty slow but the world building and magic is so worth it! 🙂
