February Book Haul: 20 Books!

Top Ten Tuesday(25)

I wasn’t really planning on doing a book haul this month but I have gotten so many ARCs that I decided, why not? Normally I don’t get tons of ARCs at all but recently I have been which is really exciting for me! I did purchase four books on here but that’s it, the rest are review copies sent to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The Atrocities by Jeremy C. Shipp

One of Tor’s new novellas that’s a creepy sounding gothic horror, I read Destiny’s review here and really wanted to read it!

Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough

I’ve already seen a lot of great reviews of this book and it’s based off the true story of painter Artemisia Gentileschi. It is told in verse though so we’ll see if I can do it, I’m hoping so since the story seems great.

The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara

I have been SO excited for this book because who doesn’t want a pirate book? Especially one about a romance between Mary Reade and Anne Bonny? I haven’t seen the best reviews for it though so far but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed because I NEED a good pirate book for once.

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings by Various Authors

This is an anthology full of re-tellings/re-imaginings of folklore and mythology from East and South Asia. So basically it sounds like something I would LOVE!

Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton

A YA Fantasy about a girl who hunts down women/demons who can manipulate the flesh of others but then finds out she is to marry the prince which then leads to her discovering she possesses a forbidden magic.

The Bird and The Blade by Megan Bannen

Another YA Fantasy that’s Asian inspired and seems to involve some politics and multiple POVs/characters. Honestly the synopsis has a lot going on but I know it sounds really good!

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

This one is a Little Mermaid retelling about Ursula, that’s all I needed to know!

Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett

There’s dragons! It does seem like the romance might be full of tropes but hopefully the heroine is as badass as she sounds and we get to see plenty of dragon fighting!

Royals by Rachel Hawkins

Normally I don’t go for contemporaries especially ones that seem more romance focused BUT I am a sucker for books featuring modern royalty, I don’t know why!

**** Four of the review copies are missing from this photo because I didn’t have them at the time****

Toil & Trouble: 16 Tales of Women and Witchcraft by Various Authors

A whole anthology of witches! Gay witches!

Pacifica by Kristen Simmons

I cannot believe this but Tor actually sent me a finished copy of this book and I’m super excited to give it a read! There’s pirates, I’m not sure if it’s more modernized pirates or more fantasy style pirates…but there are pirates.

Run, Hide, Fight Back by April Henry

This is a short little YA thriller about a group of kids that become trapped inside a mall with a shooter.

Circe by Madeline Miller

Because “Song of Achilles” was great and I love books featuring Greek Mythology.

Campfire by Shawn Sarles

I really love YA horror and there aren’t enough YA horror books out there, in my opinion. This one is about a group of kids that go camping and while around the fire tell a story of Mountain Men who hunt unsuspecting campers!

The Lamb Will Slaughter The Lion by Margaret Killjoy

Another Tor novella. This is horror, which I can never get enough of, and is about a woman searching for clues about her friend’s suicide and ends up in the town of Freedom, where the residents have summoned a spirit to protect them. However, she arrives right as the spirit turns on the summoners and she must fight to save the town.

The Barrow Will Send What It May by Margaret Killjoy

The sequel to “The Lamb Will Slaughter The Lion”, I haven’t read the synopsis just yet in case there are spoilers.

Reign of the Fallen

The cover is gorgeous and I’m here for the gay necromancers.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Because everyone told me too! If this is anything less than perfection I’m going to have some words for you guys!

The Belles by Dhonelle Clayton

Once again I got this because it was pretty hyped up but also sounded interesting.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

“Nevernight” was AMAZING and I finally got the sequel so I’m ready to be hurt again!

I have the eBook of Circe on pre-order. I loved The Song of Achiles so I can’t wait to read Circe. And I’m so excited to read The Belles.

Wow, you had a great month!! I was really excited to see The Unbinding of Mary Reade featured here; I hadn’t heard of it yet and just added it to my Want to Read list on Goodreads. You had me at “pirates,” but I’m especially intrigued by the fact that this novel’s based on the lives of female pirates who really existed.

That’s exactly why I added it as well! Not only are there not enough pirate books in YA generally but there definitely aren’t enough featuring the stories of real pirates! Hopefully it’s a great read! 🙂
