Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Love That I Have Under 2,000 Goodreads Ratings

Top Ten Tuesday(9)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

It has now been moved over to That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is a freebie, so I went through the extensive list of previous topics on The Broke and The Bookish (link above) and picked this one! I’m always a fan of receiving and giving underrated book recommendations, and having under 2,000 ratings is a good standard for being underrated I feel. So here’s some books I loved that need some more love!

10.) The Lamb Will Slaughter The Lion by Margaret Killjoy
Goodreads Ratings: 541

This is a novella so it’s pretty short (which is always nice!) and it’s about a creepy deer demon that eats evil-doers’ hearts. Basically. It also has a great cast of diverse characters (POC and LGBTQ+).

9.) Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough
Goodreads Ratings: 1,043

An extremely well written, feminist telling of the story of painter Artemisia Genileschi. It’s told in verse so it’s a quick read but very, very worth it.

8.) A Conspiracy of Stars by Olivia A. Cole
Goodreads Ratings: 522

This is more on the slow side but it picks up in the second half! It’s a sci-fi set on another planet where the residents are mostly scientists and study the local flora and fauna, the creatures are very interesting! It reminded me a lot of the movie “Avatar”. I cannot believe this has so few ratings, it’s amazing!

7.) Between The Blade and the Heart by Amanda Hocking
Goodreads Ratings: 640

This is more of a fun read that I found to be very fast paced and full of action. What I loved best was that there’s tons of different mythologies included throughout the story! Also the main character is a Valkyrie charged with killing other immortal beings, it’s pretty awesome.

6.) The Empress (The Diabolic #2) by S.J. Kincaid
Goodreads Ratings: 1,707

While I wasn’t the happiest camper when I heard “The Diabolic” was being turned into a series instead of a standalone, this was still really good. I was not disappointed! There’s tons of twists and turns to keep you turning pages! I really recommend checking it out if you liked the first book!

5.) The Hanging Girl by Eileen Cook
Goodreads Ratings: 601

This is a great mystery/thriller involving a girl who offers herself up as a (fake) psychic to a police investigation. There’s a lot of great twists and I did not see that ending coming!

4.) The Hollow Girl by Hillary Monahan
Goodreads Ratings: 247

This book has a tough subject matter, the main plot revolves around the main character’s rape (off page) but she uses her witch abilities to exact revenge. It’s such a fantastic story, if you can stomach it, that is.

3.) Dreamfall by Amy Plum
Goodreads Ratings: 1, 084

This is such a unique story, it’s about a group of teens that all have sleep disorders and sign up for a sleep expierment. However, things go wrong and they all end up in a shared dreamspace of nightmares. I’ve never read anything like it and it was definitely creepy during some parts, also pretty fast paced!

2.) Kingdom of Ash and Briars by Hannah West
Goodreads Ratings: 662

I feel like I talk about this book all the time but it’s just so underrated! It’s a fantasy with its own unique world building but also weaves in four different retellings as well: Hua Mulan, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Jane Austen’s Emma. SO GOOD!

1.) A Drop of Night by Stefan Bachmann
Goodreads Ratings: 1,456

This one’s a little weird but so unique and very entertaining! It’s about a group of teens that become trapped in an old (ancient?) underground palace in France full of traps and something more sinister….It’s a mix of horror and thriller!

I really like the movie Avatar, so I think I’ll check out A Conspiracy of Stars! I also definitely wasn’t thrilled to discover that The Diabolic was getting another book, but I’m looking forward to The Empress because I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.
It’s always nice to get underrated book recommendations 😁. I think anything by Cat Winters is underrated and worth the read!
