Graphic Novel Recommendations

Top Ten Tuesday(5).jpg

I don’t talk much about graphic novels on my blog but I definitely should because there’s some amazing ones out there! I find it hard to review individual volumes which is why you don’t see many reviews from me but I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you guys.

The number of volumes I put next to each title is the number I personally have read, there are volumes I have yet to read!

I will also be linking each title to the first volume in each series on Goodreads, if you’re interested in checking any of these out.

The Locke & Key Series by Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez

I have to say I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first volume in this series, it just didn’t capture my attention as much. However, I gave the series another shot and fell in love! This series is about the Locke family (more so the three children) and Key House, where there are mysterious keys that unlock even more mysterious abilities (such as turn yourself into a ghost). There’s a lot of different story lines to kind of follow throughout but are never too much to keep track of and I love how creative the world and keys are.

It’s a pretty dark atmosphere throughout the series too, definitely not very light-hearted and things can get pretty violent as well.  However, I love the way everything is wrapped up in the end!

Descender (Volumes 1-4) by Jeff Lemire & Dustin Nguyen

This is a sci-fi graphic novel series revolving around androids and robots and humanity’s fear of them as they are under the constant threat/fear (again the word fear) of giant robots called, Destroyers, coming back and annihilating whole populations again. The art takes on a sort of watercolor effect and is gorgeous! It’s a pretty character driven story tying together different groups and their plot lines, I have come to be very fond of a lot of the characters too. Some of them are just too cute!

I have to say this reminded me a lot of the video game series Mass Effect (which I love and worship) so if you’re a fan, like me, then I definitely recommend checking out this series!

The Wicked + The Divine (Volumes 1-6) by Kieron Gillen & James McKelvie

This series is my life pretty much, the art is so colorful and vibrant! I’m not sure exactly how to describe the plot since I don’t even know what’s going on half the time! Every 90 years gods and goddesses are reincarnated into well…pop stars pretty much, that’s the gist of it anyways. There’s a lot of crazy stuff going on in this series, trust me! But the characters are awesome and I love how unique the mythology is there’s Greek, Celtic, Sumerian, and Japanese just to name a few.

Monstress (Volumes 1-2) by Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda

Another graphic novel series that’s a bit hard for me to place but mostly it’s fantasy and has some seriously gorgeous art. Yeah, Sana Takeda is a queen! There’s only two volumes out currently and it’s so hard when each one comes to its end because I NEED MORE! The world building is spot on and very, very well fleshed out but the plot line is something I don’t want to say too much about since there’s spoilers. If you like your fantasy complex and a bit gritty, I recommend this series!

Rat Queens (Volume 1) by Kurtis J. Wiebe & Roc Upchurch

This is a graphic novel series that’s just tons of fun, everything is pretty humorous for the most part and there’s gorgeous, colorful art! Also if you’re a fan of Dungeons & Dragons, this is pretty much it, definitely a fantasy lover’s fantasy graphic novel.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Trust me when I say “Nimona” is 100% worth all of the hype! The story is very engaging while also managing to be pretty light-hearted and fun at the same time! There’s never a dull moment and we follow the quirkiest and most lovable of protagnoists, Nimona of course. She volunteers to be the side-kick of villain, Blackheart, and she can also shape-shift. There’s fantasy, science, and super powers! What more could you want?

Nice choice! I’ve been gearing up to start Locke & Key and Monstress for a while now, and thanks to you I’m starting tonight! With at least one haha. 🙂 Nimona is awesome! I’ve read it when it was still a webcomic, and was very sad when it finished, it’s definitely one of my favorites! My other favorites include quirky and cute, but also weirdly bizarre. My favorite comic is Lumberjanes, and my fave graphic novels are: Through the Woods, Anya’s Ghost, In Real Life, Kindly Corpses, Pinocchio by Winshluss, and anything by Kerascoët, Amélie Fléchais, and Shaun Tan. 🙂

I’m terribly behind on comments (catching up now!) but hopefully you enjoyed the first volume of Locke and Key! I personally didn’t love the first volume as much but once you hit #3 and on it’s so addicting!
I definitely need to continue with Lumberjanes since Noelle Steveson, you know? Haha! I do have copies of both Anya’s Ghost and In Real Life that I need to hustle up and get to but I absolutely loved Through The Woods (it’s actually going to be included in round 2 of my graphic novel recs). These others sound interesting though and I’ll have to check them out, thanks for the recs! 🙂

Thank you! I agree, I feel like I’m always looking for graphic novel recommendation posts but they either recommend the same novels or they’re super deep into the super hero ones (which I have no problem with but I’m looking for non-super hero GNs) or I never find any! I have to say TW+TD only gets better I didn’t like Vol. 3 since it’s filler but the latest Vol. (#6) was super good! 🙂

Ah, perfect timing, Heather! I was just looking for graphic novel recommendations 😁. I agree that Nimona was a really sweet series. Also, androids, robots, and watercolors—Descenders sounds like my cup of tea.

I really enjoyed the Locke & Key graphic novel. The art wasn’t my favourite, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the story. It was such a wonderfully dark graphic novel. 🙂 I also adore Nimona!
And I want to read all the other ones you mentioned, so I’m really glad to hear that you enjoyed those as well. 😀

Yes, I agree! I wasn’t a big fan of the art for Locke and Key either but the world was definitely dark and interesting! And Nimona is almost too cute and fun NOT to like!
Hopefully you’ll enjoy the rest of them too, I would love to hear what you think! 🙂
