TBR Lows & Highs #3

Top Ten Tuesday(14).jpg

If you would like to participate in this meme as well I will list the rules and please remember to credit and link back to Destiny’s blog so she can see your posts!

Rules:

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5-10 (or more, if you feel ambitious!) titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”)
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation of why you removed it
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

I realized that this is a sort of companion novel/series to Pearson’s other trilogy the Remnant Chronicles which I have not read. So I figure I will start with that series first and see if I’d like to continue and read this one.

The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson

This one sounded so good! It’s a YA dystopia about the Earth under control of a powerful group and a main character who escapes them to an island full of rebels. However, I heard it’s really, really, really slow and boring.

Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart

I wasn’t the biggest fan of “We Were Liars”, I thought it was alright but I’m not super thrilled to read another of Lockhart’s books. Especially since I heard this one wasn’t all that great.

Strange Fire by Tommy Wallach

I just don’t have a lot of interest in reading this one at the moment, it actually does sound decent though. I may add it back in the future but for now it goes.

The Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson

I just don’t have a lot of interest in reading this one anymore, it’s one of those books where I’m sure it’s pretty good but maybe not for me.

Devil in Ohio by Daria Polatin

The only reason I added this? It’s YA horror. The only reason I’m un-adding this? Destiny said it was awful.

27 Hours by Tristina Wright

This sounded like an interesting YA sci-fi and it’s full of diverse characters, which is awesome. However, I heard it was still kind of “meh” and I’ve heard a lot of bad things about the author so I just don’t want to waste my time with this one.

Ink, Iron, & Glass by Gwendolyn Clare

Another cliche sounding fantasy that I don’t know why I added it in the first place.

The Diminished by Kaitlyn Sage Patterson

I’ve read a lot of YA fantasy and unless the reviews are stellar or it sounds really unique I tend to not bother with them anymore.

Sleeping Beauties by Stephen & Owen King

I really like the idea of this and I do enjoy Stephen King but I just don’t think it would hold my attention very well.

Maestros Volume 1 by Steve Skroce

This was in this week’s Goodreads blog post as a recommendation from Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples for fans of the Saga graphic novels. So. That’s why I added it!

Sleepless Volume 1 by Sarah Vaughn

Same as above answer, this was a recommendation.

The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee

I NEED THIS LIKE YESTERDAY! THIS IS THE BOOK I DIDN’T KNOW I NEEDED! This is an Avatar: The Last Airbender novel telling the origin of Avatar Kyoshi, which is amazing because Kyoshi is one of my favorites!

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

A fantasy about a land, called the Borderlands, that the main character gets to go to full of elves, harpies, and mermaids. I’m here for the mish mash of fantastical creatures!

The Antidote by Shelley Sackier

I received an ARC of this and it’s another YA fantasy with forbidden magic!

The Black Coats by Colleen Oakes

Another ARC of a YA contemporary about a group of women who fight back against the injustices done to them by men and take revenge.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

This is also a YA Contemporary that comes so highly recommended that I had to add it, seriously everyone loves this book!

The Starlit Woods by Various Authors

An anthology of new fairy tales by some fabulous authors, Destiny made me add this because she brought my attention to its existence!

What the #@% Is That? by Various Authors

Another anthology I added because of Destiny! This one is horror and features a story by the amazing Seanan McGuire!

Finding Baba Yaga by Jane Yolen

This is a Tor novella that is about a young woman who seeks out Baba Yaga and is told in verse. I love Tor novellas and this one sounds interesting!

Whoa, you removed so many! Way to go!! I removed The Sandcastle Empire and Genuine Fraud not too long ago – I just wasn’t feeling either of them much. And you know how I felt about Devil in Ohio, lmao! And 27 Hours… sigh. The writing was honestly not very good and after what happened with her, I don’t recommend it to anyone these days. 😦

On the other hand, YES to The Rise of Kyoshi!! Thank you for reminding me that I need to add it to my TBR shelf. And I’m so happy you added The Starlit Woods, What the #@&% is That, and Finding Baba Yaga! I also have In Other Lands, which I read the first 100-ish pages of, and it’s fun (the humor is VERY British, which I enjoy), but I was in my fantasy slump at that point so I put it down to save for a later date.
