Halloween Recs: Devils & Demons & Ghosts, Oh My!

Copy of Top Ten Tuesday(6).jpg

This is another part of my Halloween recommendations! I’m planning on doing 5 other installments of this which I’m really excited for! Sorry, for being so absent lately. Especially for October since it’s my favorite month! Hopefully the title explains it all though, this round of recommendations is all about books featuring devils, demons, and ghosts. (Stay tuned for zombies, witches, monsters, and more recs!)

Shutter by Courtney Alameda

This is an interesting book about the descendants of the characters in Stoker’s “Dracula” and who hunt ghosts and monsters. The reason I placed it under “ghosts” is that it involves an ancient curse and more ghosts than anything else, in my opinion. It’s pretty entertaining and had plenty of action, the world building was unique and overall it’s a fun read that has some creepy parts but overall isn’t too scary for those of you looking for a tamer horror read.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

So many other people recommend “Anna” and I have to agree with them, it’s one fun ghost read! It tells the story of Cas, a teenager who hunts and kills ghosts and his latest hunt is a local ghost who they call Anna Dressed in Blood who is a vengeful, merciless ghost and yet she spares his life. Anna herself is actually pretty terrifying and I loved how scary, suspenseful, and gory the story was. Very addictive read and 100% perfect for October!

The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco

I’ve already briefly talked about this book in my other rec post but it’s about a vengeful Japanese spirit who kills murderers and those who hurt children. It’s absolutely terrifying and one of the scariest books I’ve ever read, I loved the Japanese mythology weaved in as well.

Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton

This is a strange book but in a good way, the world building is excellent and extremely creative. This YA dark fantasy is about a village who makes human sacrifices to the Devil’s Forest during the Slaughter Moon after the deal they made with the devil in order to prosper. This is a quieter horror book (not scary, creepy parts, but overall not scary) and some might not consider it horror but it has quite a few horror elements and I feel it is one, dark fantasy as I mentioned for sure.

The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich

A psychological horror about a mysterious fire that killed three students and one went missing, Carly Johnson. Years later a diary is found in the ruins written by Carly’s twin sister Kaitlyn….only Carly never had a twin.

This is written in a very unique format with video transcripts, diary entries, police records, and psychiatric reports. It’s a ton of fun to read and very twisty and disturbing (not deeply though) although not super scary or creepy, definitely recommend for those of you looking for less terrifying reads.

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

Another book featured on my scariest reads post, this is one of my all time favorites. It features both demons and devils, or maybe it doesn’t…..it’s a very open ending so it’s up for interpretation but it’s terrifying nonetheless. A creepy, bloodstained, abandoned cabin out in the middle of nowhere on the 1800’s prairie, what could go wrong?

Definitely recommend this for those of you who love scares and gore, it’s not for the feint of heart that’s for sure!

Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan

One of my other favorite, scary reads! This is all about the urban legend of Bloody Mary (which has always scared me!) when a group of teenage girls accidentally summon her and she haunts them mercilessly. The action and scares never let up and you’ll devour this fast paced book!

The Lamb Will Slaughter The Lion by Margaret Killjoy

This is a Tor novella (pretty much guarantees its greatness right there) about a queer, punk rock traveler who travels to the last town her friend was in before his mysterious suicide. There she witnesses a blood red, three antlered deer turning on the people who summoned it as their protector. The mythology is so interesting, it’s fast paced, there’s a lot of suspense, and the characters are fantastic! I definitely recommend checking out this diverse novella for Halloween!

The Siren & The Specter by Jonathan Janz

Probably my favorite horror read of all time, it’s so hard picking favorites but this book is just so good! It features a skeptical author who debunks hauntings staying in America’s most haunted house. It’s super well written, full of great characters, an intriguing plot, and not to mention some super terrifying scares!

And The Trees Crept In by Dawn Kurtagich

Another book I have recommended before but I’ll keep recommending! It’s a slower, more quiet horror book about a pair of sisters going to live in their aunt’s isolated manor in the middle of the forest where her grip on reality starts slipping, an entity known as the Creeper Man stalks them, and the trees slowly creep in towards the house….

There are definitely some very creepy moments and the twists are great, I’d say this is more of an intermediary horror book if that makes sense? It isn’t hardcore terrifying but it might be a little too scary for those of you who don’t enjoy being scared. It’s in the middle.

Another amazing recommendation list! I can’t believe I haven’t read Shutter yet, and Anna Dressed in Blood moved waaaay up on my TBR after we talked about it a few days ago! I’m reading The Girl from the Well right now and it’s really fun so far. Major Ring vibes, which I love! And, of course, always YES to The Siren & the Specter!
