Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women and Witchcraft by Various Authors

If I were to recommend you my favorite and most witchy book this would be it! There are 15 short stories in this collection and all feature POC, LGTBQ+, Feminist, witchy goodness! There isn’t a bad story in the bunch, there were a few I didn’t love as much as others but I rated them all 3-5 stars, which is pretty dang good. I loved how diverse and interesting each story was with the different takes on witches and magic. This is also a great read for those of you looking for your Halloween fix but don’t want to be scared doing it!

Labyrinth Lost & Bruja Born by Zoraida Cordova

The reason I’m throwing both of these together is because “Bruja Born” is my favorite but it felt wrong to recommend a sequel and not the first book. So here we are! This is a great series about Latinx witches a.k.a. brujas, it features POC and LGTBQ+ characters, a great magic system and mythology to go along with it, and also portrays great familial relationships. I also recommend giving the sequel a try even if you don’t care for “Labyrinth Lost” though because the second book is just stellar!

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

This is a dark fantasy with unique witches, magic, and world building although it is a little more slowly paced. I recommend pushing through though because the world is so interesting! It deals heavily with necromancy (thus why it’s a pretty dark fantasy), monsters, and dark magic. It also features POC characters!

Bad Blood by Demitria Lunetta

This is an interesting one and also pretty underrated. My favorite part of the whole book is the setting in Scotland, it’s just so much fun! It’s about a girl, Heather, who goes to spend the summer with her aunt in Scotland after recovering from self harm problems. However, she can’t stop dreaming about two twin girls from centuries ago. I know it doesn’t sound witchy but I promise it is and it’s pretty interesting but like I said I personally thought the setting made the book much better.

The Hollow Girl by Hillary Monahan

This book won’t be for everyone, it’s very hard to stomach. It’s about Bethan, who is apprenticing with her healer grandmother in a clan of Welsh Romanies. One night a group of boys assault her and her friend, in order to save her friend’s life she must collect certain ingredients for a spell….ingredients she’s going to harvest from her assailants. Trigger warning for sexual assault, violence, and gore. As I said it will be a hard read but very much worth the ending.

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

This counts, right? It’s an origin story for the sea witch from ‘The Little Mermaid’, a lot of us know her as Ursula though! There’s actually quite a bit about witches and magic in this book, I was a little surprised. While this is first and foremost a ‘Little Mermaid’ retelling, I personally think there’s just enough witchy goodness in the story to satisfy my fellow witch lovers!

I love Labyrinth Lost (I gotta read Bruja Born!!) and The Hollow Girl was incredible! I felt a bit indifferent towards some of the stories in Toil & Trouble, but some of them I REALLY loved like Emery Lord, Nova Ren Suma and Elizabeth May’s. I also need to read The Bone Witch!

Labyrinth Lost is on the witch-tbr I hope to get through within the next few weeks because I am on a bit of a witch kick at the moment. I have Toil and Trouble on there too and I’m excited to get stuck into that because I don’t tend to read many anthologies and having one all about witches is simply fabulous.

I’m currently reading Toil and Trouble, and really enjoying it! Another witchy book I’ve loved this year is The Wicked Deep 🙂
