This is the zombie historical fiction with badass women you are looking for and if you weren’t looking for it well…..trust me it’s still worth the read! This features a diverse, POC cast of characters, plenty of action, great twists, no romance, and likable characters. Basically it has everything you need and it’s a great read for Halloween, especially if you don’t want something super scary.
This book is more “infected humans” than zombies and I think that makes it all the scarier! They’re fast and all around terrifying, they don’t get as much page time as I would have liked but definitely enough for me to recommend it to my fellow zombie lovers. This is action-packed, very atmospheric, and has some great, well developed characters. It’s a western too so seeing a zombie/infection story with a western desert setting was really unique.
This book deals in traditional zombies, you know the un-intelligent, slow moving ones? However, it’s more of a character study than anything and it’s so well written that you won’t be able to help but fall in love with the characters and their story. It’s a very emotional ride, I was bawling at one point so be warned!
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
I think this is a book that’s due for a re-read for me, however, I think it’s still safe to say I recommend it. It reminds me a lot of “Rot & Ruin” where the book is more so about the characters and surviving than the actual zombies. There are twists and some pretty stressful situations as a girl’s small village is breached and she learns everything she was taught may not be true.
Probably my favorite book on this list and isn’t about zombies necessarily, it’s about a contagion (hence the title). Therefore we deal with infected humans that are 10x more terrifying than zombies, in my opinion, in space. IN SPACE! On an abandoned planet! This book is extremely fast paced, really terrifying, has no romance, and has diverse characters. If you enjoy sci-fi or horror or both together I definitely recommend this one!
