January Book Haul

Top Ten Tuesday.jpg

I swear Book Outlet is the biggest reason my TBR never shrinks, it also doesn’t help that my little sister is getting into reading now so I use that as an excuse to order!

Each title is linked to their Goodreads page in case you want more info or to add it to your TBR too!

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay

With my love of horror and all of the glowing reviews I had to get this one! It’s about a woman being interviewed about the events that happened to her family 15 years ago. Her sister displayed signs of acute schizophrenia but when the doctors were unable to help they turned to the Catholic church where a priest suggested exorcism. The family then becomes the subject of a reality TV show called “The Possession” and tragedy ensues.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

A classic mystery that I feel very obligated to read, I’ve never read any Agatha Christie so I figured it was time I start!

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

Ditto.

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

I actually already read this, still have to review it here though! It’s absolutely fantastic though and I devoured it, it’s just so creepy! “Baby Teeth” is about a woman named Suzette whose 7 year old daughter, Hanna, has behavioral issues, a devil with her and an angel for Dad. And Hanna will do anything to get her Dad all to herself…

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

I caved and got a copy because sometimes you just need some addictive chick-lit to read and devour!

Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

This YA sci-fi actually has some pretty great reviews so I’m excited to read it! It’s about a young woman who’s a soldier and a rebel and an android who begins to evolve, they are enemies but end up having to work together to end the war for good.

My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies #2) by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows

After reading the amazing-ness that is “My Lady Jane” I’m convinced I have to read everything by these authors! This particular book tells the tale of Jane Eyre and author Charlotte Bronte and I’m sure in the fashion they told the first book, witty and fun.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

Another book that has a ton of glowing reviews and is a YA contemporary that I’m not quite sure how to sum up so here’s a bit of the blurb: “Engaging with themes of identity, diversity, and the freedom to choose”.  I think it’s going to be relatable and incredible.

House of Small Shadows by Adam Nevill

Sometimes I’ll buy a book just because it sounds decent and is ridiculously cheap, like “House of Small Shadows” which was only $1.19 on Book Outlet. It’s about a woman who goes to catalogue a man’s doll and puppet collection and examine his displays of posed taxidermy animals. However, the man’s niece shows her the dark message behind his “art” and suddenly she is questioning what’s real and what isn’t.

The Unfortunates by Kim Liggett

This is actually a pretty short book at 224 and I really enjoy short reads sometimes, it’s nice to have a quick read every now and then. “The Unfortunates”is about Grant Tavish, a senator’s son who was involved in a fatal accident and just wants to face the consequences, however, because of his father’s connections he won’t. When he goes on a traditional cave excursion, Grant plans on staging an accident and leaving but suddenly he along with four other teens are trapped after the cave collapses. But there’s something else down there and it’s hunting them…

Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

I’m not 100% sure what this book is exactly about so it’s even harder to sum up but it deals with the characters’ time line being “stuck” and they must make harsh decisions to fix it.

I really loved Pessl’s book “Night Film” so I’m just excited to read another of her books!

The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware

This book seems like a mystery/thriller with a Gothic twist, could just be the vibe I get from the cover too though! It’s about a woman who receives a letter about an inheritance, she realizes the letter was sent to the wrong person but decides to use her skills as a tarot card reader to claim the money anyways. She finds herself at the funeral and feels hat somethings is very wrong and strange with the whole situation…

Revival, Vol 1: You’re Among Friends by Tim Seeley, Mike Norton, and Mark Englert

One day in rural Wisconsin the dead come back to life, now Officer Cypress has to deal with the outcomes while also trying to solve a murder case where everyone alive or dead is a suspect.

I heard good things about this one and I really like that it’s set in the Midwest!

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

I mean come on…..it’s basically adult Scooby-Doo with a Lovecraftian twist. How can you go wrong? I also bought it for $2.99 on Kindle so I couldn’t pass it up!

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft

This was on sale for Kindle for $0.99 and with all the stellar reviews from my fellow fantasy loving friends I figured I’d give it a try. It sounds really unique and like it has a lot going on! It’s about the Tower of Babel that houses “ringdoms” all stacked up on each other full of geniuses, tyrants, airships, etc. Thomas Senlin arrives here for his honeymoon but is separated from his wife after arriving and he must navigate the madhouses, ballrooms, assassination attempts, and even a flying fortress to find her.

Blood Heir by Amelie Wen Zhao

Ana has an Affinity for blood allowing her to control it and hides behind palace walls to escape enslavement. When her father, the emperor, is murdered she is framed as the killer and she must flee and enter a land where her kind are hunted. She must find her father’s killer and clear her name but finds a conspiracy greater than she imagined.

Sounds like a wonderfully dark and twisted YA fantasy!

Thanks Amanda! I’ll have to check it out after I read it, it’s been hard avoiding spoilers for that book, haha, and here’s hoping we’ll both enjoy My Plain Jane but with how amazing the first book is I think we’re safe! 🙂

Totally since it’s been around for so long. I avoided all spoilers before I watched the mini series which was great. I think it’s a bit different than the book, but I can’t wait to see what you think of the book!
