Unplanned Hiatus/Blogging Slump Update

Hey guys! As you can probably guess from the title of this post I’m giving you a quick update on why you haven’t seen me around (AT ALL) these last couple weeks.

Well I think it’s a bit of exaggeration on my part saying there is a reason at all, because there really isn’t other than that I’m extremely lazy (just kidding, but also not really)! I’ve been going through a blogging slump recently and have ZERO motivation to do anything blog-related from doing posts up, commenting, and checking out out your guys’ posts as well. I feel terrible for it too which only makes the slump worse since I really get after myself for being such a crappy blogger (in my eyes) sometimes. Believe me when I say a slump does absolutely no good for the self esteem and don’t even get me started on seeing my stats decline!

The only upside here is the fact that even though I’ve been a terrible, crappy blogger and not chatting with you guys recently I have actually kept up with my reading. There would be nothing worse then a dual blogging/book slump! So needless to say I do have material for posts but I just don’t….feel…. like blogging at the moment. Which is horrible because I want to but at the same time my brain won’t really let me if that makes sense to you guys.

So this is just a little update to let you all know that I DO miss you and want to get back to chatting books with you all soon, I’m hoping to get back in the groove here this week or next week! I also apologize in advance that my comments on my own posts and yours will be super late, PLEASE FORGIVE ME?!

Terrifying Book Recs For Halloween

Hello everyone it’s time for one of my favorite things to do: recommend horror books for Halloween! Horror books are definitely some of my favorite books to read so weeding through them and finding the best ones is fun for me. Hopefully this list I put together will help you find a last minute read for Halloween or just help you find your next scary read!

I tried to put these books in order of how much I enjoyed them BUT let it be known I did love every single one and recommend each one on this list. I put the scariest ones (for me at least) at the top of my list!

13.) The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

Why I Recommend It: This is a short story by thriller mastermind Gillain Flynn, for any of you who have had the pleasure of reading one of her books before you’ll know you’re in for some dark, messed up shit. This one just so happens to have a bit of a paranormal theme as well, is the house haunted or are the characters manipulative and unreliable? I was actually pretty creeped out during certain scenes and so I think this would make for a great, quick Halloween read!

You can read my full review of “The Grownup” here.

12.) Welcome To The Dark House by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Why I Recommend It: Love classic slasher horror movies? You’ll love this book then, it reads just like your typical horror movie which makes it tons of fun to read through! There’s many POV characters and quite a few blood pumping scenes too.

You can read my full review of “Welcome To The Dark House” here.

11.) The Merciless by Danielle Vega

Why I Recommend It: Ever wonder what would happen if you combined Mean Girls with blood, gore, and scares? Well maybe not but if you find yourself wondering now then check this book out! A bunch of teenage girls hold another captive and perform an exorcism on her, what could go wrong with that? I will say again that this book is pretty gory so if you’re really squeamish beware!

You can read my full review of “The Merciless” here.

10.) The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich

Why I Recommend It: This is a psychologically twisted and very sinister feeling book, it’s creepy and messes with your mind while reading. There are a few scary-ish scenes but mostly the plot twists and journey through the mind of madness are what makes this a very fun book.

You can read my full review of “The Dead House” here.

9.) Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Why I Recommend It: This is a fairly scary book that’s fun, gory, and full of ghosts! There were more than a few creepy scenes and it’s very action-packed and fast paced. Another little fun fact: the entire book is typed in red ink.

You can read my full review of “Anna Dressed in Blood” here.

8.) The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey

Why I Recommend It: This is an extremely well-written, historical fiction full of …well, monsters. The atmosphere Rick Yancey creates is perfectly eerie and the monsters themselves are the stuff of nightmares.

You can read my full review of “The Monstrumologist” here.

7.) A Drop of Night by Stefan Bachmann

Why I Recommend It: This book has both supernatural horror elements as well as survival horror elements and it’s very reminiscent of the movie “The Cabin in the Woods”. It’s also very unique I’ve never read anything like it before and I doubt you will have either! I mean being trapped in a palace below ground is enough to scare the crap out of you.

You can read my full review of “A Drop of Night” here.

6.) Alice by Christina Henry

Why I Recommend It: This is a dark, twisted retelling of “Alice in Wonderland” and so if you’re a fan of Alice and can stomach a lot of gore and violence then I highly suggest checking this one out. But I will warn you now that there is quite a bit of violence including sexual violence so if you’re sensitive to any of that then skip this one.

You can read my full review of “Alice” here.

5.) Through The Woods by Emily Carroll

Why I Recommend It: It’s a collection of short, illustrated stories that will creepy you the hell out. Seriously I didn’t know if I was going to be able to sleep after reading and SEEING these things! So if you need a quick, last minute read to scare your pants of for Halloween then definitely check this one out.

You can read my full review of “Through The Woods” here.

4.) Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

Why I Recommend It: Do you have a fear of isolation or demons or maybe both? Then maybe don’t read this…unless you like being scared, like me, then this book will probably terrify you! It’s also fairly short so yet again another good last minute read for Halloween.

You can read my full review of “Daughters Unto Devils” here.

3.) And The Trees Crept In by Dawn Kurtagich

Why I Recommend It: I think the fact that Dawn Kurtagich is on this list twice really speaks volumes about what a fantastic horror writer she is. This book is ten times scarier than “The Dead House”, it’s twisted and extremely creepy. There’s crazy people, creeping trees, and the Creeper Man. Creeper Man should be enough to show you how scary this book is.

You can read my full review of “And The Trees Crept In” here.

2.) The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco

Why I Recommend It: See that cover? That cover is fucking terrifying. If you have a deep set phobia of creepy Japanese ghosts then first off join the club and second off this book will scare your pants off.

You can read my full review of “The Girl From The Well” here.

Slasher Girls & Monster Boys

1.) Slasher Girls & Monster Boys stories selected by April Genevieve Tucholke

Why I Recommend It: This is an anthology that not only includes many popular YA authors but also some downright horrifying stories. I kid you not, I was literally looking over my shoulder while reading some of them! If you’re looking for a few short stories to give you nightmares then look no further.

You can read my full review of “Slasher Girls & Monster Boys” here.

Random Ramblings #6: New Header Image

random ramblings 2

Hey guys, I really love the freedom of doing Random Ramblings posts. I get to well….ramble! So anyways I’ve been pretty sucky at finishing books and writing reviews lately but I’m trying to kick my own ass back into gear. I think all of you lovelies can expect reviews for “Illuminae” and “Crimson Bound” soon though!

Anyways let’s get to the point of this post…..A new header image on my blog! I figured I would share this because if you’re reading my posts in the WordPress Reader then you don’t ever see my header……tis a shame.

I just got this terrible itch to redo it…almost like spring-cleaning for my blog since it’s beginning to get warm and springy outside here in North Dakota.

The Sassy Book Geek

I kept some of the same elements of my old header image like the book collage because I want it to LOOK like a book blog, yeah?

If any of you are wondering I used Canva to make this image, it’s a LOVELY website for making graphics plus it saves all of your designs which is helpful especially for me.

On the downside I now have to go through my reviews on Goodreads and such to revamp all of them with the new image…oh well!

Aaaaaannnnnddddd that’s pretty much it! I hope you all have an awesome weekend!

Random Ramblings #5: Absent-Blogging

random ramblings 2

Hey guys! I’d like to take this blog post time to say sorry, I’ve been majorly lacking in my reviewing and posting.

(totally’s not that hard)

I’ve been super busy with life in general and it’s been hard to find the time to sit my ass down and write up posts, it’s pretty sad on my part. I’m here to say that I think I’ve managed to free some time up now so I can get back in touch with all of you wonderful book lovers!

I’ve had tons of book tags, award nominations, and comments that I have yet to acknowledge so if you’re worried don’t be, (I’d actually be very flattered if you were worried), I’ll be getting around to all of that this week sometime. Not to mention get some damn reviews up for the books I have been finishing!

This definitely isn’t a long post by any means, but I thought I’d give you all an update anyways.

Random Ramblings #4: I Just Reached 100 Magnificent Followers!

Random Ramblings #3 – I’m In A Book Slump!

random ramblings 2

That’s right I believe I’m in a dreaded book slump.

I haven’t posted anything in four days! FOUR DAYS! I am a disgrace, at least in my eyes.

Yes, if I was a Lannister, Tywin would be kicking my ass right now guaranteed.

I would firstly just like to apologize to all of you fabulous readers who venture over here and read my posts! I’m terribly sorry I haven’t been posting as much as I should recently. I’ve just been busy with family and friends and of course the impending holidays.

One of the main reasons however is the fact that I think I’m in a book slump. Oh no!

Yes I do have an arsenal of TBR books at my disposal but I just lost my motivation to hardcore read right now. It’s terrible!

I think it started with my requesting (too many) ARC’s and I now feel a teensy bit overwhelmed. Especially since they weren’t very good, but I have to tell myself now if I don’t like the book I MUST DNF IT. Right?

I still have some ARC’s I need to finish but I’d like to ask you guys (my lovely readers) if you would be so kind as to recommend some of your favorite books to me?

Yep that’s right recommendation time for me! Have fun with it guys, I’ll be looking forward to it!

Leave any recommendations in the comments below!

That’s enough of me rambling now….

Blog Awards: The Encouraging Thunder Award Nomination

Thank you so much to Michelle over at Book Adventures for nominating me for the Encouraging Thunder Award!

This blog award only consists of one basic question: Why did you start blogging?

Well it all started when my mother bought me “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” when I was 5, of course she read that one to me and I was enthralled.

Then we started the second Harry Potter book and at the time I was maybe 7 and I NEEDED to know what happened next but, unfortunately, my mother was talking on the phone. So being the pesky child I am I tried to get her attention and demand that she read to me now, and of course she told me no, so I went and sat and stared at my Harry Potter book trying to read it and accomplished reading a few sentences. I was pretty proud.

After that I was told my mother would not be reading to me anymore and that I’d have to read on my own, and I did just that and I haven’t quit yet! At that young age the passion of reading sparked inside of me and I really owe it to my mother AND J.K. Rowling. I like to think if it weren’t for Harry Potter I might have found reading to be boring like many other kids at that age do.

And also:

Truer words have never been spoken.

Now you know how I GOT my passion for reading.

So what did I decide to do about my passion for reading?

Start a blog of course! I don’t have many friends that enjoy reading like I do, so I figured what better way to talk about books then to get on the internet and find people who love them as much as me?

I’ve been blogging for about 2 months now, that’s right I’m a super newb and still learning the ropes. If you have any tips for me I would LOVE to hear them!

That’s really all there is to it, folks. I love reading and blogging is a great way to get out there and converse about books with fantastic people who share that interest. THAT is why I started blogging, and I don’t regret a minute of it.

Besides I love pushing my book feels onto the innocent book blogging community.

Annnnnnnd this is awkward, I don’t really have anyone to nominate. So if you want to tell me why you started blogging then consider yourselves nominated for this award!

Random Ramblings #4: October Bookhaul (Plus Birthday Bookhaul)

random ramblings

Originally I was going to do a birthday bookhaul post, but then I waited too long and got some more books so now I’m just combining the October books I got with the books I received for my birthday. September 29th is close enough to October right? I think so.

Don’t you love seeing stacks of new books?

I know you do, don’t lie.

So let’s dissect that stack shall we?

“Vengeance Road” by Erin Bowman

Part of the Birthday Bookhaul group, isn’t that cover just gorgeous?

I’ve heard good things about this book and I’ll definitely get to reading it ASAP.

“Walk on Earth a Stranger” by Rae Carson

Once again part of the Birthday Bookhaul, and again a gorgeous cover.

I haven’t read anything by Rae Carson before but tons of people rave about her other series “Girl of Fire and Thorns” series and even though I haven’t read that series,  I expect this new series of hers to be good.

“The Sword of Summer” by Rick Riordan

This one was obtained by me freaking out the day it was released and running to Target and buying it. Boom. Done.

I’m sure I will just devour it like I did the Percy Jackson series.

“The Scorpion Rules” by Erin Bow

Birthday Bookhaul. I’m ALMOST finished with it as of right now and let me tell you it is absolutely awesome. Review will be coming along shortly if you’re interested!

“Dreamstrider” by Lindsay Smith

I bought this little beauty on a whim this last week because it sounds so good plus…..

GORGEOUS COVER! I have so much cover love for this book!

I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I’m hoping it’s as great as its cover….

“Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo

I finally got this book!!!!!!!!

Although this book came out ON my birthday I didn’t get it as part of my Birthday Bookhaul, unfortunately.

I’m definitely, DEFINITELY planning on reading this next.

“Lips Touch: Three Times” by Laini Taylor

Birthday Bookhaul, naturally because I asked for it a thousand times from my boyfriend and he really came through for me.

I finished this recently and JUST posted a review for it, which you can find here.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” George R.R. Martin

I bought this complretley on a whim, I saw George R.R. Martin and A Song of Fire and Ice prequel novella and I HAD to own it.

Hopefully this will help tide me over until “Winds of Winter” comes…

*shakes fist and book at George R.R. Martin*

You’re also basically getting a sneak peak of my reading schedule for the next month or two. Exciting.

Blog Awards: Creative Blogger Award Nomination

Creative Blogger Award

I was nominated for The Creative Blogger Award by Zezee with Books! Thank you so much for the nomination, I really appreciate it!

The Rules:
  1. Thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  2. Share 5 facts about yourself.
  3. Nominate some bloggers in return and notify them about their nomination.
  4. Keep the rules in your post to make it easy for everyone to know what to do.

5 (Maybe) Fun Facts About Yours Truly:

  1. The one obsession, of my many, to rule them all would be anything and everything pertaining to Middle Earth. I am absolutely crazy about The Lord of the Rings. Exhibit A: My Pinterest Account. Seriously I have like 100 boards just for LOTR and The Hobbit. And this lead to my other obsession with A Song of Fire and Ice. Basically fantasy is my all time favorite…..mostly Lord of the Rings though…..  Yes I did. And if I lived in Middle-Earth I'd never want to leave.:
  2. I’m also a huge, HUGE fan of classic rock. It’s super depressing for me since nobody I really know is, they’d rather listen to pop or country. My favorite bands would include AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, and Motley Crue, but mostly AC/DC. I had the honor of seeing AC/DC and Motley Crue in concert once, it was awesome.
  3. When I’m not reading or wasting away in front of my TV watching movies, I am playing video games. No I don’t just play Call of Duty either, I’m talking RPG’s. I play Skyrim, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc. Dragon Age though is the shit, I’ve “wasted” so many days of my life playing that series of games. Dragon Age: Inquisition:
  4. Another random fun fact (I’m seriously running out of things to say about myself) once upon a time I met some semi-famous people. Those of you who watch or have ever watched the Syfy show “Ghost Hunters” will be impressed, if you haven’t….then maybe not. I attended Paracon and met Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango, I nearly fainted and it was the greatest thing ever. That’s it basically…meandsteveghosthunter
  5. I collect a lot of Funko Pops, it’s a guilty pleasure because I seriously love those things.funkopops

So essentially I think you chalk all those facts up to me being a complete and total fangirl.

And now I nominate these lovely bloggers for this award:

Kelsey at Don’t Shush Me!

Tanaz at Bookish Freaks

I’m sorry if you guys have already been nominated before, just ignore this if you have.

(You don’t have to do a post if you don’t want)
