Spooky Scary Book Tag

Top Ten Tuesday(91)

I found this little tag over on Hardback Hoarder’s channel and thought it would be a super fun tag to do for October. There really aren’t a ton of horror type book tags out there that I haven’t done yet, which is sad! However, I have found a few so keep an eye out for them!

Clever Fox is the original creator of this tag!

1.) What goes bump in the night? Name a book that has legitimately scared you while reading it.

Image result for the girl from the well

I know a lot of people didn’t find this book all that scary but it terrified me because I am deathly afraid of disjointed walking, any kind of crawling, and ghosts that even slightly resemble Samara from The Ring or the ghost from The Grudge. They terrify me. So of course all of those things are present in this book and while reading it I couldn’t even walk past a room that had its life off!

2.) Jack O’ Lanterns and Classic Costumes: A book you always reach for during Halloween time.

Image result for slasher girls and monster boys

I don’t usually have time to do re-reads but I always attempt re-reading “Slasher Girls & Monster Boys” just because it’s made up of a bunch of fantastically scary short stories which makes it perfect for Halloween reading.

3.) Black Cats and Magic Mirrors: A book you love that is laced with superstition and/or magic.

Image result for labyrinth lost

How about both? “Labyrinth Lost” has a bit of superstition since the main character and her family are brujas (witches) who also happen to perform magic! It’s a wonderful story full of diversity as well.

4.) Witch’s Brew: Favorite witch character in any book/series.

Image result for the bone witch

(Besides everyone in the Harry Potter series….)

I really liked Tea from “The Bone Witch” I thought she was pretty likable and her power of necromancy is definitely neat.

5.) Ghouls and Ghosts: A book that still haunts you to this day (good or bad).

Image result for red rising

I’m still salty about so many things that happened in this book and I know it will continue to haunt me as well!

6.) Haunted Graveyard: You’re all alone in a haunted graveyard, you get ONE book to give you comfort, which is it?

Image result for night film a novel marisha pessl

I would want to bring a book that would keep me so distracted I wouldn’t notice all the creepies around me so “Night Film” is perfect for that. This book definitely held my attention in that way!

7.) The Undead: Favorite supernatural creatures to read about (i.e. vampires, zombies, werewolves, etc).

Do witches kind of count? If they do I definitely pick witches but if they don’t I like werewolves the best but I don’t come across too many books that include them.

8.) In the dead of night: Pick a book with a black cover.

Image result for the night circus

The Night Circus! Fabulous book, gorgeous cover that also happens to be black.

The (Birthday) Cake Book Tag!

Top Ten Tuesday

This is actually just The Cake Book Tag but I figured since today is my birthday it’d be the perfect tag to do so I just snuck birthday in with the cake!

Thank you to Lauren @ Comma Hangover for tagging me, be sure to head over and check out her answers as well!

CHOCOLATE CAKE
A dark book you absolutely love

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design

“The Hollow Girl” was very dark and graphic but I loved it, the character overcame so much and was so strong. Lots of magic, revenge, and suspense!

VANILLA CAKE
A light read

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design

This is a very light-hearted, adorable book and quick to finish plus it’s full of diversity! The romances and friendships are all very positive as well, and who doesn’t want to read a book full of geek culture?

RED VELVET
A book that gave you mixed emotions

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(1)

I’m going to interpret this in a way of “feeling many different emotions” and not the sort of mixed emotions that means I both loved and hated it.

I honestly haven’t cried while reading a book in a long time but I full blown ugly cried when I read this book! I won’t tell you why but…it broke me! I also raged, laughed, and cried some more! Overall this book sent me on an emotional roller coaster ride. (I loved it though).

CHEESECAKE
A book you would recommend to anyone

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(2)

So many! But….

I definitely recommend “Stormdancer” I ton though just because it compiled so many awesome elements into one book: mythology, world-building, steampunk, talking mythological creatures, badass protagonist, no central romance, and so on! Plus I think Jay Kristoff really has a beautiful way of writing, I adore it.

COFFEE CAKE
A book you started but never finished

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(3)

I only bought this because a lot of my friends recommended it and were all in love with it. I read maybe 2 chapters? Wasn’t feeling it and set it aside and have yet to pick it back up again. I don’t know if I ever will either, I feel like paranormal romances aren’t my thing.

CARROT CAKE
A book with great writing

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(4)

I just have to say Laini Taylor is also a fantastically, gorgeous writer but I have to say Jessica Khoury’s in “The Forbidden Wish” as well. Such lyrical, beautiful writing it had me swooning practically!

TIRAMISU
A book that left you wanting more

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(5)

I NEED this book to have a sequel or spin off, I know it won’t happen but I still need it! I loved the way retellings were woven in with a separate plot line, I adored the characters, and the world building too!

CUPCAKES
A series with 4+ Book

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(6)

Harry Potter? Can I use that? I don’t really read a lot of series since I’m terrible at finish them but great at starting them!

FRUIT CAKE
A book that wasn’t what you anticipated

Copy of 613px × 404px – Untitled Design(7)

I am not one for romance-y or contemporary books, they just aren’t my cup of tea. However, I was really surprised by how much I ended up loving this book the writing had an addictive quality to it and I could not stop reading! Is it the best book ever? No. But damn was it entertaining.

It’s Finally Fall Book Tag!

Top Ten Tuesday (23)

It’s finally the first day of fall/autumn so I figured this would be the PERFECT tag to do today! Fall is my favorite season! I love all of the warm, cozy clothes and all the colors.

I found this tag over on Zane Reads where she did a fantastic job with it so be sure to head over and check out her answers as well!

This tag was created by Tall Tales.

my page divider

1. In fall, the air is crisp and clear: name a book with a vivid setting!

Image result for an ember in the ashes

This book had some fantastic world building full of magic and even some mythical beings, it’s also very Roman inspired as well. There’s definitely plenty of attention to detail in this setting!

2. Nature is beautiful… but also dying: name a book that is beautifully written, but also deals with a heavy topic like loss or grief

Image result for the hate u give

“The Hate U Give” deals with some very powerful topics (loss, grief, overcoming prejudices) but it is very beautifully written and also very heart warming as well. I loved the family dynamic in this story.

3. Fall is back to school season: share a non-fiction book that taught you something new.

Image result for hyperbole and a half

I don’t read much non-fiction and the last one I probably read was “Hyperbole and a Half” in which case I did learn a bit about depression which helped me to understand, a loved one who does suffer from it, a bit more.

4. In order to keep warm, it’s good to spend some time with the people we love: name a fictional family/household/friend-group that you’d like to be a part of.

Image result for the weasleys

Can anyone NOT say the Weasleys for this? I mean come on they really are the ideal fictional family to go hangout with!

5. The colorful leaves are piling up on the ground: show us a pile of fall-colored spines!

Untitled design (2)

I’m actually not at home at the moment of making this tag so I’ll just put a collage together of covers, still counts!

6. Fall is the perfect time for some storytelling by the fireside: share a book wherein somebody is telling a story.

Image result for the wrath and the dawn

In my head I’m thinking of a kind of “story-ception” situation in which case I’ll go with “The Wrath and the Dawn” since Shazi is telling stories within a story!

7. The nights are getting darker: share a dark, creepy read.

Image result for slasher girls and monster boys

Creepy reads are my jam! I’ve got so many I’d love to recommend but I’ll go with “Slasher Girls & Monsters Boys” since there’s plenty of creepy and dark stories in that anthology and there’s sure to be something for every horror lover within its pages.

8. The days are getting colder: name a short, heartwarming read that could warm up somebody’s cold and rainy day

Image result for nimona

This book is hilarious as well as very heart warming, it’s all around awesome and adorable at the same time!

9. Fall (luckily, it’s my favorite season) returns every year: name an old favorite that you’d like to return to soon.

Image result for percy jackson

Perhaps a Percy Jackson re read? I don’t really  do re reads all that much but I’d go for this series!

10. Fall is the perfect time for cozy reading nights: share your favorite cozy reading “accessories”!

Image result for cozy gif

Definitely some comfy sweatpants, a warm blanket, fuzzy socks, and a cup of tea! I love being all warm and cozy to read!

11. Spread the autumn appreciation and tag some people!

I’ll tag a couple people but please do not feel obligated to do this tag at all!

The Leonardo DiCaprio Book Tag

The Leonardo DiCaprio Book Tag

Hello fellow book lovers!

I figured it was about time for another book tag and what better, random book tag to do than one about Leonardo DiCaprio?! Because we all love Leo, right? I know I do!

This tag was created by gingerreadslainey; video.

my page divider

Image result for growing pains leo dicaprio

1.) Growing Pains – A book you read before it was popular (or hyped-up)

Image result for shadow and bone book cover

This book was one that I read way back before I started blogging and it was also before the entire trilogy was out too. So I mean “technically” I read it before it was super popular, especially since I didn’t really know if it was popular or not anyways…..still counts! I didn’t love it as much as everyone else anyways though!

Image result for leo dicaprio and tobey maguire

2.) Tobey Maguire – Your favorite book best friends

Image result for queens of geek

I’ve got a few but the ones freshest in my mind would be Jamie, Taylor, and Charlie in “Queens of Geek”. They were all so geeky and adorable and they treated each other all so well too, positive friendships for the win!

Image result for kate winslet and leonardo dicaprio

3.) Kate Winslet – Your OTP

Image result for a gentleman's guide to vice and virtue

Of course I have many, many, many OTPs but the most recent one that I adore to bits and pieces would have to be Monty and Percy from “A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue”. They were both so clueless to the other’s feelings when they were clearly in love with each other, I loved that they finally got together!

Related image

4.) Titanic – A book that made you cry or emotionally distressed

Image result for red rising

I usually don’t cry while reading books, they have to be pretty darn sad to get me to shed actual tears. I haven’t cried while reading a book in years until I read “Red Rising” in which the first few chapters had me bawling, I had to put the book down and have a good cry about it.

Image result for martin scorsese and leonardo dicaprio

5.) Martin Scorsese – An author you will always buy their books no matter what

Image result for ve schwab

I have a few other authors I’d auto-buy but V.E. Schwab is the Queen! Her books are always so unique, well-written, and full of action!

Image result for leo dicaprio and vs model

6.) Victoria’s Secret Models – A genre you will always go back to

Fantasy is my most loved genre so of course I will always go back to it, there’s nothing like getting immersed and lost in a creative, unique, and new world!

Image result for happy meme leo

7.) Happy Meme Leo – A character that makes you smile

Image result for the martian book

Mark Watney from “The Martian” is honestly one of the funniest characters I’ve come across in a book. Seriously, I laughed my way through a lot of that book…..you know when my brain wasn’t overloading from all of the science and math bits!

Image result for leo dicaprio character collage

8.) Every Leo Character – Your favorite complex characters

Image result for vicious book cover

The best, most complex, and morally ambiguous characters can be found in “Vicious”! Seriously some of the best characters I’ve ever come across in a book, hands down!

Image result for leo dicaprio oscar

9.) Leonardo NoOSCARo (but now he does!) – A book that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves!

Image result for kingdom of ash and briars

I know I sound like a broken record but this is one of the most underrated books I’ve read and it’s just plain fantastic! A great magical realm that also combines four retellings: Sleeping Beauty, Hua Mulan, Cinderella, and Jane Austen’s Emma!

New York Times By The Book Tag

Top Ten Tuesday (22)

I was tagged A SUPER long time ago to do this by the wonderful Jessica @ The Awkward Book Blogger! Be sure to head over and not only check out her answers for this as well but to just check out her amazing blog! Thanks for tagging me Jessica (it only took me a year haha!)

my page divider

What book is on your nightstand right now?

Image result for zero repeat forever

I’m currently reading my ARC of this book which is about an alien invasion told from the POV of both one of the invading aliens as well as a surviving teenage girl. So far it’s interesting but not really anything special.

What was the last truly great book you read?

Image result for gentleman's guide to vice and virtueImage result for queens of geek

It’s a tie since I finished both of these recently and honestly can’t choose between them! “Gentleman’s Guide” was the the funnest book I’ve read in a while full of adventure, good humor, fantastic writing, and the most adorable of romances (which is also M/M!). While “Queens of Geek” was also a ton of fun I mostly really enjoyed how diverse and relatable the characters all were, the geek culture, and how positively many issues were handled!

If you could meet one author (living or dead), who would it be? What would you ask?

Image result for jk rowling

I’m sure almost everyone says this but I’ll have to go with J.K. Rowling because while I could hold a good conversation with many of my favorite authors I just feel I’d have so much more to ask her! I’d love to know how she came up with so many different aspects of the Harry Potter universe but mostly I’d have to ask why she chose Harry to end up with Ginny. My inquiring, nosy, Harry x Hermione loving mind would like to know!

What books might we be surprised to see on your shelf?

Image result for vampire academy series

The Vampire Academy series probably! I’m not really one for any urban fantasy books anymore and I really don’t like a lot of trope-filled YA romances so I think it’s at least slightly surprising to see I have the entire Vampire Academy series. I really loved this series though!

How do you organize your personal library?

I kind of….don’t really. I of course keep series together and books with the same authors together but other than that it’s pretty much a free for all. I keep the books I’m going to read soon along with books I read and loved on the top to middle shelves and the books I’m not going to read for a while or didn’t enjoy as much on the bottom shelves.

What book have you always meant to read but haven’t gotten around to yet?

Image result for the lord of the rings by jrr tolkien

I’m actually really ashamed of myself for this because while I did read “The Hobbit” and absolutely worship all of the movies I just haven’t read this one yet. The writing is a little harder to click with but I keep telling myself I’m going to read it eventually!

Disappointing, overrated, just not good: what book did you feel you were supposed to like but didn’t?

Image result for one of us is lying

I usually like YA mystery/thrillers and I thought I’d love this one especially since it drew some inspiration from The Breakfast Club (which I love) but it was not for me at all. I thought it was pretty cliched and didn’t spend enough time building up suspense or thrills either.

What kind of stories are you drawn to?

Fantasy stories for sure, there’s just something about being transported to a completely new and imaginative world! I find that for the most part Fantasy is a genre that is more complex and immersive and the biggest part of why I read is to be immersed in new worlds and stories.

If you could require the president to read one book, what would it be?

Image result for harry potter booksImage result for the hate u give

Harry Potter is just kind of my for fun answer because…it’s Harry Potter but honestly out of the books I have read I feel “The Hate U Give” is a very powerful, moving, and important read and I feel someone in such a position of power could benefit from reading it.

What do you plan to read next?

Image result for mask of shadows by linsey miller

I have an ARC of this book as well which is being released at the end of the month so I’m planning on reading it next!

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Top Ten Tuesday (20)

It’s my favorite time: unpopular opinion time! Maybe it’s just me but I really love reading reviews or opinions from people who are breaking the mold with hyped books! I feel that I, personally, am one of those people sometimes since I don’t usually go for super hyped books but then again I do at the same time. It’s fun to see different opinions on popular books!

I saw this tag over on Hannah’s blog Mortal Reader so be sure to head over and check out her beautiful, amazing blog as well!

****Please remember that we are all entitled to our own opinions so if you agree or disagree feel free to discuss in the comments BUT I’d appreciate if there were no “hate” comments towards my opinions or anyone elses’s in the comments!****

my page divider

A popular book you don’t like?

Image result for the crown's game

I really, really wanted to like this book since it promised a magical fight to the death in a competition to be the czar’s enchanter in a fantasy Russian setting. However, I thought it was really tedious with the over the top love triangle, lack of extravagant magical displays, and the other lack of actual fighting to the death.

It was definitely a hyped book last year and it seems a lot of other people DID enjoy it so it seems I’m a bit in the minority.

You can read my full review of “The Crown’s Game” here!

A book series everyone hates but you love?

Image result for the bone witch

I actually can’t really think of any books people HATE that I did like but “The Bone Witch” is probably the closest thing to it. A TON of people did not enjoy this book and found it to be really boring but I really enjoyed it! It was a bit slower paced but I understood that Chupeco was working up the plot and world building and it was definitely interesting enough to keep me reading. I’m all about those dark magic witches!

You can read my full review of “The Bone Witch” here!

A love triangle where the MC ends up with the person you didn’t want them to?

DON’T HATE ME! I really, really didn’t like Ginny all that much and I really didn’t like that Harry ended up with her. I would have much rather seen Harry end up with Hermione. (basically I go against every love triangle or love interest in books, I always root for the underdog!)

Image result for sorry not sorry

A popular genre you rarely reach for?

Contemporary

I will on occasion pick up contemporary books especially if they’re not mostly romance. However, seeing as a lot of YA contemporaries are romance based I definitely don’t reach for them that much. I will pick them up but only if they have a TON of amazing reviews!

A popular beloved character you didn’t like?

Celaena Sardothien

To be fair I’m only basing this off of just reading “Throne of Glass” but I really didn’t like Celaena at all. She was all talk and no action in my opinion, I wanted to see exactly why she’s the most feared and deadly assassin and yet she spends most of her time mooning over boys, dresses, and shoes.

A popular author you can’t seem to get into?

Cassandra Clare

Not a big fan and unless she writes something outside of her shadowhunter world I probably will continue to not be a big fan. I really didn’t enjoy “City of Bones” at all and if the rest of the series are all similar I won’t be reading those either.

Popular trope you’re tired of seeing?

Love Triangles

Image result for love triangle

I would love to actually see this trope become completely eradicated because I really don’t like it. Is this really an unpopular opinion though? I feel that I see a lot of other people who don’t like love triangles either.

Anyways I just don’t buy into them unless they’re very, very believable or that I genuinely think both options are suitable.

Popular series you have no interest in reading?

Image result for the selection

I just feel like this series doesn’t have anything that interests me, a competition to win over a Prince with lots of dresses? No thanks I’ll pass.

The saying goes “the book is always better than the movie” but what movie do you prefer more than the book?

Image result for the da vinci code

The Da Vinci Code maybe? I don’t usually like anything truly better than the book but this is probably the closest one since the movie follows the book quite closely and I really did like the movie.

snow white

Snow White – This book, like the movie, started it all!

Favorite debut book from an author

Image result for red rising

There are a few debuts I think are fantastic but honesty “Red Rising” just takes the cake because it was perfect in every way. Non-stop action, fast pacing, great world building, and fantastic characters. What more could you want? Honestly, I wish ALL debuts were this wonderful!

Cenicienta-4.jpg

Cinderella – A diamond in the rough

Just like Cinderella, you either didn’t expect much out of this character in the beginning but they turned out to be a total gem.

Image result for the hundredth queen

I figured Kalinda would be another run-of-the-mill YA Fantasy heroine but as this question states, I was pleasantly surprised by her. She actually was very badass and played on both her weaknesses and her strengths, but she wasn’t one of those heroines who can suddenly be perfect at everything and I always respect that.

aurora (1).jpg

Aurora – Sleeping Beauty

A book that makes you sleepy or just could not hold your attention

Image result for blackhearts book

No. Just no. Blackbeard origin story should equal pirates right? No pirates here. Greatest book let down ever.

ariel2

Ariel – Under the Sea

A book with a water/ocean setting

Image result for the seafarers kiss

This is actually a “Little Mermaid” retelling so really….it’s the perfect answer!

belle

Belle – Beauty and the Books

Name a book with the best Bookworm/Book Lover

Image result for my lady jane

There actually are a lot of books with bookworms as their main characters because what better way to make your character relatable to bookworms reading the book? Jane is probably the biggest bookworm I’ve come across though and it’s very endearing!

jasmine

Jasmine – The Thief and the Princess

Name a book with an unlikely love story (either in terms of romance, or a book you didn’t expect to love so much)

Image result for the forbidden wish

I’m not usually one to like romance-heavy books or books that feel like they might be romance-heavy so I was surprised I liked it so much. Plus it’s a very forbidden romance within and so “unlikely” but I loved it and the way it ended up working out!

Also it’s an “Aladdin” retelling so there’s that too…..

pocahontas1 (2)

Pocahontas – The real life Princess

Name a book that is based on a real life person you want to read/have read

Image result for and i darken

I don’t read many books with real historical (or otherwise) characters but this one is definitely the BEST! It’s about a gender bent Vlad the Impaler and it also happens to be one of my all time favorite books because it’s 100% badass.

mulan (2)

Mulan – The Princess that saved her country

Name the fiercest heroine you know

Image result for and i darkenImage result for the diabolic

I couldn’t pick just one because Lada from “And I Darken” and Nemesis from “The Diabolic” are both the most badass characters I’ve ever come across. Well….and any characters Jay Kristoff writes but I digress! I love female characters that don’t give any fucks and these two ladies nail it!

tiana

Tiana – The Princess with the coolest and most diverse crew

Name a diverse book, whether it is a diverse set of characters (like Tiana’s group of Naveen, Louis, Ray, and more) or just diverse in general

Image result for the hate u give

This book has a diverse cast of characters and is 100% worth all of the hype as well. Go read it right now!

unnamed

Rapunzel – Let your longggggg hair down

Name the longest book you’ve ever read

Image result for a dance with dragons

At a whopping 1,040 pages it’s definitely the longest book I’ve ever read! Epic bragging rights!

merida

Merida – I determine my own fate

A book where there is no love story/interest or isn’t needed

Image result for this savage song

Characters and a plot that don’t focus on romance at all! It actually revolves more around morally grey characters and monsters, it’s great.

elsa.jpganna

Anna/Elsa – Frozen Hearts

A book in a winter/cold setting

Image result for a game of thrones book cover

Sorry but I honestly could not think of any books I’ve read with a “cold” setting at all so I’m gonna be a little cliched and leave this meme….
