Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

Top Ten Tuesday(65)

I’ve been seeing this tag floating around a lot right now (because ya know…it’s mid year) and really wanted to give it a try! I got the questions from Rayna @ Reader Rayna so be sure to head over and check out her answers as well!

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2017

Image result for red rising

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This is actually a tough one since I have enjoyed a lot of the books I’ve read this year so far but I’m just going to have to go with this one. “Red Rising” was absolutely fantastic and completely blew my mind! It has pretty much every factor I look for in a perfect book there’s action, twists, and fantastic main and secondary characters!

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2017

I actually haven’t read any sequels yet this year! I start series more than I continue or finish them, I’m terrible! I will say though that I’m definitely planning on reading “Now I Rise” by Kiersten White so that will be the first sequel I will read.

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

Image result for godsgrave jay kristoff

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

I’ve got quite a few books I’m excited for but MOST excited for has to go for the sequel to “Nevernight”! It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Jay Kristoff’s and absolutely loved “Nevernight” and with that cliffhanger at the end and just all the crazy shit that went down I’m definitely looking forward to what’s next in “Godsgrave”!

Biggest Disappointment

Image result for the dragon's price

The Dragon’s Price by Bethany Wiggins

As many books as I’ve loved this year there have been almost as many disappointments. So far this is the only book that’s gotten one star even though a few have gotten close. “The Dragon’s Price” was poorly written, boring, and incredibly cliched which earns it this spot on the biggest disappointment for me this year so far.

Biggest Surprise

Image result for the hundredth queen

The Hundredth Queen by Emily R. King

I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did, I figured it’d be full of YA tropes or just not be as exciting as a fantasy should be in my opinion. However, I really loved Kalinda, the MC, there was lots of action and twists, and some really interesting world building and mythology!

Favorite New Author

Image result for pierce brown

Pierce Brown

I’m not sure if I can really say this yet but just from reading “Red Rising” I know I will finish the series and crave more from this author! I’m excited to see what he will write next if it’s even half as good as “Red Rising”! Also he’s nice to look at……

Newest Fictional Crush

Image result for the wicked and the divine the faust act lucifer

Lucifer from The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 1: The Faust Act

I don’t really find too many swoon-worthy characters in books anymore but I absolutely loved the reincarnation of Lucifer we see in Volume 1 of TW+TD! Now just to clear the air a bit I don’t think of myself as bisexual but I do admire the way some women look, we are a beautiful gender! And Lucifer was not only very beautiful but also a complete badass, I just loved her so much and she’s really the only character I’ve read about so far this year that could be considered a fictional crush.

Newest Favorite Character

Image result for red rising

Sevro au Barca Red Rising

Can’t say I really have any characters that I absolutely worship yet this year but a very close one would have to be Sevro from “Red Rising”. He’s hilarious and also pretty badass in his own way, he’s also a bit of an underdog and I couldn’t help but love and cheer him on throughout the book.

Book That Made You Cry

Image result for red rising

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

I know, I know. I’m using this book for almost every question but I’m just SO freaking impressed with it! I actually teared up and cried a little in a lot of books I’ve read so far this year but I cried the hardest and the most frequent while reading “Red Rising”. Right at the start of the book I had to quit reading because I was crying so hard!

Book That Made You Happy

Image result for the night circus

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I can’t say too many of the books I’ve actually read this year have made me really happy but the magical, wonderful story that is “The Night Circus” did.

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation

I haven’t watched any yet this year! The only one I can honestly think of so far this year is “Everything, Everything” which I don’t have a big interest in.

If you have any other recommendations let me know!

Favorite Post You’ve Done This Year

I’d probably have to go with “My Recipe For The Perfect YA Fantasy Book” just because it’s my favorite genre and also I love the gifs I used! Yeah, I’m that person that laughs at their own jokes.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

I’m actually disappointed with the fact I didn’t get the copy with the blue-edge pages but this cover is still the prettiest one I’ve gotten so far this year!

I do own a copy of this and I definitely NEED to read it before the end of the year! I love Laini Taylor’s writing and world building so I’m dying to see what she’s created with this book.

Top Ten Tuesday(62)

Big thank you to Jess @ Beaucoup Books for tagging me to do this one! Be sure to head over and not only check out Jess’s answers but her amazing blog as well!

1. What was the last book you marked as “read?”

The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen

Image result for the wicked + the divine volume 1

This is a graphic novel so it may be cheating a little bit (if it is the last BOOK I read was “One of Us is Lying”). I haven’t reviewed this one yet as I finished it yesterday but it will be a glowing review, it was absolutely amazing! The art style was awesome and the story was even awesome-er, highly recommend it by the way!

2. What was the last book you marked as TBR?

The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke

(No Cover Yet)

The last two books I’ve read by this author were really “meh” so you might be wondering why I’d add another one of her books. Well, it’s really hard to pass up a book that’s described as being a “genderbent Beowulf re-imagining” because that sounds PERFECT and also BADASS! I’m definitely more than willing to give Tucholke another go just for this premise!

3. What book do you plan to read next?

Well I had a TBR set up for June but I also went to my library and they had a bunch of new releases so this is really a toss up. I’m terrible about sticking to reading plans, I’m sorry! However, I really want to make sure I finish up the books I borrowed first so I don’t really know. Either:

Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook by Christina Henry

Image result for lost boy christina henry

or

Dreamfall by Amy Plum

Image result for dreamfall amy plum

4. Do you use the star rating system?

Of course! Although I try to be a bit pickier with my ratings because I don’t really like when other people rate EVERYTHING 4 or 5 stars.

5. Are you doing the 2017 Reading Challenge?

Yes I am! My goal is 80 books this year and currently I’m at 31 books read. So I’m 5 books behind schedule, yikes! However, I did factor in that I’d be reading shorter books as well as graphic novels so I’ll catch up eventually.

6. Do you have a wishlist?

Does any book lover NOT have a wishlist? I have a list of books I “need to buy” and wait until they have a decent prices so I can get a copy!

7. Which book do you plan on buying next?

Image result for when dimple met rishiImage result for bad romance heather demetrios

Currently I’m torn between When Dimple Met Rishi and Bad Romance! If you’ve had a chance to read either of these let me know what you thought in the comments down below and help me make up my mind!

8. Do you have any favorite quotes? Share a few.

“The books we love, they love us back, And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us. I can see it in you, sure as I see it in me. You’re a daughter of words. A girl with a story to tell.” – Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

“Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.” – Vicious by V.E. Schwab

9. Who are your favorite authors?

Jay Kristoff, V.E. Schwab, Laini Taylor, Christina Henry, Amy Lukavics, Rick Riordan, J.K. Rowling (obviously!), & Gillian Flynn.

These are all authors I’ve read multiple books by and loved all of them!

10. Have you joined any groups?

Top 5 Wednesday & Hype or Like Friday! I don’t join the topics as much but these are both fantastic and fun groups to join!

A Classic Book That You Love or Really Enjoyed

Image result for dracula bram stoker book cover

Dracula by Bram Stoker

I think a lot of us can agree on the fact we don’t read many, many classics because we are usually forced to read them in school. I know that’s part of my problem! I’d rather read them for fun than for school! However, “Dracula” was one I read of my own volition and absolutely adored, so much that I bought my own copy. I found that the language wasn’t too hard to comprehend and it IS the original vampire story after all, it’s very eerie and thrilling!

Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor

There’s actually quite a few hyped books I’d like to get around too but I do actually own a copy of “Strange The Dreamer” now to read! I absolutely adore Laini Taylor’s writing style so I’m very excited to read her newest book.

Shortbread

An Author You Can’t Get Enough Of

copy-of-top-ten-tuesday14

Jay Kristoff

I cannot get enough of this man’s books! I have loved and adored the three of them that I have read “Stormdancer”, “Nevernight”, and “Illuminae (with Amie Kaufman) and it’s all proof to me that he is a diabolical genius! His plots are so dark, gritty, and full of plot twists and on top of that his world building is extremely unique and immersive. I want more books!

Samoas/ Caramel DeLites

An Emotional Roller-coaster (this cookie was hard … so any book that made you feel more than one emotion, strongly. The choice of emotions is up to you)

Image result for illuminae book cover

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

This book covers all emotions on the emotional roller coaster! There is so much action and so many plot twists that I couldn’t help but be all over the place, it’s such a thrill ride of a book!

Oreos

A Book Whose Cover Was Better Than The Story OR Vice Versa, Where The Story Was Better Than Its Cover

Image result for the crowns game

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

Sorry if you loved this one, I know I’m disappointed in myself for not loving it too!  I love how it’s a Crown made up of Russian architecture and it’s just sooooo pretty but I really didn’t like the story…..

Tagalongs/ Peanut Butter Patties

A Book That Wasn’t What You Expected (good, bad, or just different, interpret how you wish)

Image result for heartless book cover

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

In this case it was GOOD! I read the first book in the Lunar Chronicles “Cinder” and was not really impressed honestly so I wasn’t really too eager to read “Heartless” but it’s an Alice in Wonderland retelling/Queen of Hearts retelling so my curiosity won. I am so happy I gave it a chance though because it was so much fun to read!

Snickerdoodles

A Book You May Never Stop Rereading/ Loving

Image result for vicious ve schwab

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I actually am really terrible about rereading books because I have so many other books to read but I’m planning on rereading more than a few! I’d have to say the one I’m looking forward to the most (besides Harry Potter and Percy Jackson because those 2 are just a given) is “Vicious”. The characters are just absolutely fantastic and the story is as well, everything about it is amazing! I mean morally ambiguous super powered people, what more could you want?

Oatmeal Raisin

An Awful Surprise.

Image result for blackhearts book cover

Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman

Another book that I REALLY wanted to enjoy but sadly didn’t. This is supposed to be a Blackbeard origin story so I thought it was safe to assume there would be um…pirates? Piracy? Any sort of pirate-y action? But nope! That was too much to ask for! All I got was a very mediocre historical romance, with ZERO action. I wanted pirates!!!

Best book/series that you’ve read in 2016.

Image result for illuminae book cover

There are so many wonderful books that I read in 2016 but I just have to go with “Illuminae” because it was such a fast-paced, action-packed read!

Authors that you’ve recently found and would like to read more of in the new year.

d30e6-jay-kristoff-1006752

Jay Kristoff, of course! It is now my life’s mission to read all of his books period.

Most anticipated book turned movie/TV show.

Image result for a monster calls posterImage result for the dark tower movie poster

(There isn’t an official movie poster out for “The Dark Tower” yet)

I’ll  go with “A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness because it’s the only one coming out this year that I’ve actually already read. Otherwise I’d say “The Dark Tower” by Stephen King because it looks amazing but I have yet to read that book/series.

Name a character that you wouldn’t mind sharing a kiss with at midnight.

Image result for the diabolic

I don’t really have “book boyfriends” all that much, they have to be PRETTY good for that but I’ll go with Tyrus from “The Diabolic”. He was ruthless and deliciously clever!

What’s on your TBR for 2017.

Image result for the final empireImage result for days of blood and starlightImage result for days of blood and starlight

Image result for blue lily lily blue book coverImage result for the raven king book cover

There are so many! However the books I’m prioritizing this year are starting the Mistborn series with “The Final Empire” by Brandon Sanderson and finishing both the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy and the Raven Cycle series!

How many books do you plan to read in 2017.

I set my Goodreads reading challenge at 80 books this year so hopefully I’ll read 80 or even more! Also there will be graphic novels sprinkled throughout so it’s kind of cheating but also not really, haha!

Will you participate in the Goodreads reading challenge or any  other.

Yes and I’m also probably going to try and participate in the Beat the Backlist reading challenge as well since I have loads of backlist books that need to get read sooner rather than later. My shelves can’t take it anymore and neither can my checkbook so I’m trying to read more so I can buy more!

Any New Year’s resolutions (Bookish, Blogging, Otherwise).

Noooot really, I’m boring like that. All I can say is that I hope to improve both my reading and blog this year!

Burn, Rewrite, Reread Book Tag

top-ten-tuesday29

I was tagged to do this ages ago by Mariana @ Book Is Glee and it looks like such a fun tag so thank you Mariana! Be sure to head over and check out her answers and blog as well guys, she posts some great content!

I personally just cut up pieces of paper with my favorite books on them and drew at random for this. I also, as mentioned, picked my absolute favorite books to make this as hard and as excruciatingly painful as possible. These books are all 4-5 star reads for me.

Sorry books……

Image result for crying funny gif

I also have reviews up for ALL of these books if you’re interested, with the exception of “Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire”.

Rules:

  • Randomly choose 3 books (Tip: Use the “Sort > Random” option on your Goodreads’ Read shelf.).
  • For each group, decide which book to burn, which one to rewrite, and which to reread (a lot like Kiss, Marry, Kill).
  • Repeat until you completed three rounds (or six).

my page divider

round-1

Burn: “Sharp Objects” by Gillian Flynn

I love all of Gillian Flynn’s books and this one is probably my favorite of all of them but when put up against these other two books I’m afraid it will have to be burned…..

Rewrite: “The Wrath & The Dawn” by Renee Ahdieh

So this doesn’t really need a rewrite because the story and writing are so wonderful already buuuuuut I liked “My Lady Jane” just a little bit more so this will just have to get rewritten…..

Reread: “My Lady Jane” by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows

This is such a fun, silly, entertaining, and unique read that I just can’t bear to have it be burned or rewritten so I’ll just reread it instead!

round-11

Burn: “Slasher Girls & Monster Boys” by Various Authors

As much as I love some of the stories in this anthology there’s a few that I didn’t really  enjoy….at all. So when it’s up against these other two I’m sorry my friend…you’ll have to be burned.

Rewrite: “Half a King” by Joe Abercrombie

This book is all of my fantasy dreams come true, it’s basically YA Game of Thrones. Unfortunately for it though it’s going to be re-written because the writing is just kind of meh and when put up against Laini Taylor’s writing…it will lose.

Reread: “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” by Laini Taylor

Of course I couldn’t do anything to this precious book because it is perfect and the writing is absolutely beautiful. It could never be burned or rewritten!

round-12

Burn: “Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo

I’M SO SORRY! I DON’T WANT TO BURN YOU! However, I just love these other two books much more. While this book has great writing, great characters, and a great plot it just can’t compete with the genius of Kristoff and Scwhab. So goodbye my friend..you’ve been burned!

Rewrite: “Nevernight” by Jay Kristoff

I really like how poetic Kristoff’s writing is and I loooove this book so much but a lot of people complained about the writing being TOO lyrical. I do kind of agree that it does get a little annoying but I really didn’t mind and actually really liked it. I will go with this being rewritten since it could stand for a little improvement though.

Reread: “Vicious” V.E. Schwab

Seriously, this book is perfection. Morally ambiguous, super-powered characters and  great writing to boot. How can you not love this book?! I just have to reread this one and I actually will do it in the future……

round-14

Burn: “The Knife of Never Letting Go” by Patrick Ness

I AM SORRY, I AM SORRY, I AM SO SORRY! I love this book and everything about it is perfect but….I love the other books more. This is so hard, I’m so upset!!!! Why, book tag? Why?!

Rewrite: “Illuminae” by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman

While I really loved and enjoyed this book I really didn’t like the main characters or romance all that much. So I definitely think there’s room for improvement and a rewriting could help it out.

Reread: “Stormdancer” by Jay Kristoff

It’s no secret I love Jay Kristoff’s books and I have to say “Stormdancer” is probably my favorite one. There’s animal companionship, a badass heroine, and some awesome world-building so really it definitely does not need to be burned or rewritten!

round-15

Burn: “Alice” by Christina Henry

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK AND I’M SO TORN! I really don’t want to burn it but…..while I love the book it’s definitely really disturbing and dark so compared to these other two I’d have to just give this one up.

Rewrite: “The Raven Boys” by Maggie Stiefvater

While I love this book and the characters so much I think it could stand to be rewritten and improved upon. There’s nothing wrong with it the way it is but if it’s between this and Harry Potter well…..Harry Potter always wins.

Reread: “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” by J.K. Rowling

Of course I’m going to ensure that Harry Potter is okay! I’ve been meaning to reread the entire series for a while now and we’ll see how that goes in the future.

round-16

Burn: “Kingdom of Ash and Briars” by Hannah West

This was such a wonderful surprise of a book and I really hate to burn it……really, really hate to burn it. I’M SO SAD! I just happened enjoy these other two books more…..

Rewrite: “And The Trees Crept In” by Dawn Kurtagich

While I did enjoy this book I feel like it could use a couple of improvements and therefore I’m picking it to get rewritten!

Reread: “And I Darken” by Kiersten White

This book has such awesome character development and a badass heroine that I couldn’t stand to see it burn or be rewritten so reread it shall be!
