January New Releases I’m Excited For!

Top Ten Tuesday(2).jpg

New year, new books! It’s as simple as that! But it doesn’t make catching up on last year’s reads any easier, that’s for sure.

These are listed by release date and honorable mentions (books I either have no interest in or haven’t read their predecessors yet) will be posted at the bottom! Each title is also linked to their Goodreads page if you’d like to add them!

The Similars by Rebecca Hanover
January 1st

This is a book where I’m not 100% sold on it but it still sounds interesting. It’s about a prestigious boarding school that’s infiltrated by six clones, one of which is the clone of the main character’s dead best friend. The plot of the story seems to focus on secrets and the character getting pulled into the mystery of the “similars”.

Slayer by Kiersten White
January 8th

It’s a ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ spinoff and honestly I think that’s all we need to know…..

But in case you want more it’s about twin sisters we attend the Watcher’s Academy and are trained to be guides to slayers. The one sister, Nina, becomes the last Slayer and must now embrace her new destiny. Basically it sounds FANTASTIC!

In An Absent Dream (Wayward Children #4) by Seanan McGuire
January 8th

It’s the fourth installment of McGuire’s fantastic novella series and honestly everyone needs to read this series stat. I’m so excited to continue with more of these stories, I can’t even explain!

The Girl King by Mimi Yu
January 8th

Two sisters, one the heir to an empire and the other to live in her shadow. Then the Emperor declares their male cousin the heir and both go down very different paths in order to secure the throne. It sounds pretty intense and I’m excited to see what twists and turns this story holds!

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
January 15th

It’s Roshani Chokshi! Woo!

This is set in 1889 Paris and is a fantasy mixed with historical fiction about a group seeking an ancient artifact. It’s explained yet vague, but hopefully that’s because there’s some awesome twists in store!

Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee
January 15th

Currently reading this one and not finished because I’m just not in a reading mood, which is unfortunate. But I digress. This is a middle grade space opera based off of Korean mythology with shape shifting fox spirits, pirates, and vengeful ghosts this book sounds packed with action.

Ship of Smoke & Steel by Django Wexler
January 22nd

A YA fantasy about a female main character whose abilities allow her to access the “Well of Combat” which she should have declared to His Imperial Majesty and placed herself in his service. When she is discovered they send her on an impossible mission to steal a legendary ghost ship from which no one has ever returned and if she fails her sister’s life is forfeit.

Two words: GHOST SHIP! Honestly that’s what I’m here for it sounds fantastic!

Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye
January 22nd

I’m really curious to see if I’ll enjoy this one or not because I wasn’t a big fan of Skye’s other book “The Crown’s Game”. This is about apprentice warriors trying to prove themselves to an elite group and infiltrate a group of mysterious soldiers that may pose a threat to their kingdom.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
January 29th

A dark re-imagining of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ where the prince is cursed to relive his eighteenth year over and over again and at the end of the season turns into a vicious beast that destroys everything in his path. He needs a girl to fall in love with him in order to break the curse. And then we have the female character that comes in and has to basically decided if he’s worth trying to save or not. Pretty basic sounding ‘Beauty and the Beast’ stuff right here but I mean….that cover IS gorgeous.

The Dead Queens Club by Hannah Capin
January 29th

‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘The Tudors’? Yes, please.

This is a YA contemporary retelling of Henry VIII and his wives where he’s the “king” of his high school and we hear the tale of all of his ex-girlfriends. I actually think this sounds kind of fun and unique so I’m excited to give it a try!

The Cerulean by Amy Ewing
January 29th

A LGTBQ+ book set in a city that floats above a planet where the MC is sacrificed to release them from the planet’s grasp. But she survives the fall and discovers all the horror stories about the humans who dwell there are true and she must fight her way back home.

Ewing’s books have never really grabbed my attention but this actually sounds really good!

The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black
January 8th

I really need to read the first book so I can get in on all of the hype!

Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus
January 8th

Normally I’d probably love the sound of this but I really didn’t like McManus’s other YA thriller “One of Us is Lying” so I don’t think this one is for me.

The Winter of the Witch (Winternight #3) by Katherin Arden
January 8th

White Stag by Kara Barbieri
January 8th

Stain by A.G. Howard
January 15th

The Vanishing Stair (Truly Devious #2) by Maureen Johnson
January 22nd

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
January 29th

If I could finish the Grisha trilogy I would be pumped for this because I feel like Nikolai would be character I’d like BUT maybe I’ll just read spoilers and start with this book. I really didn’t like “Shadow and Bone”…..

The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan
January 29th

The more I read and hear about The Gilded Wolves, the more excited I get (and it comes out tomorrow)! Also, so many pretty colors. 😍😍😍 As for the Grisha trilogy, honestly, if you’re in it for Nikolai, his presence is most prominent in the second book, and then he’s hardly in the third. (So you’re totally fine with spoilers.)

I can’t wait to read In An Absent Dream and Winter of the Witch. I did buy Winter of the Witch on my Nook, and I’ll most likely borrow In An Absent Dream from the library.
