Graphic Novel Recs: Part 2

Top Ten Tuesday(5).jpg

There aren’t enough graphic novel recommendations (non-super hero specifically) in my opinion. So since everyone seemed to like Part 1 (link here) here’s part 2 of some of my favorite graphic novels! I will link review to the titles if they are available.

Paper Girls (Volumes 1-3) by Brian K. Vaughan

I think Paper Girls is sort of a hit or miss with people but I think you need to give the second volume a chance for sure, I personally think it gets better with each volume! It also reminds me A LOT of ‘Stranger Things’ since there’s a group of 80’s kids riding bicycles and aliens but there’s also time travel and all sorts of other strange and interesting happenings. I honestly never know what’s going to happen next in this series and recommend it for sci-fi fans!

Pretty Deadly (Volume 1) by Kelly Sue DeConnick

I cannot recommend this graphic novel enough! It’s a western about the daughter of Death and her origin story, there’s plenty of gorgeous art, twists, and world building. As you all probably know by now I’m always a sucker for a Death personified story especially where Death falls in love! It’s a pretty brutal world though so it isn’t for the faint of heart but I do recommend checking it out if you think you can handle it, there aren’t too many happy endings here.

Alex + Ada Series by Jonathan Luna

There are only 3 volumes in this series so it’s relatively short and I was a bit bored with it right off the bat but it got SO GOOD! It’s about a man named Alex who receives a companion android, while he is initially against it he names her Ada and begins to bond with her. He gets mixed up in the underground “free the androids” type of movement and the action starts from there! I was not expecting to be this emotionally distressed about this series but by the end I was, it’s so beautifully heart-breaking.

Another recommendation for sci-fi fans but if you’re not a big fan of robots don’t worry the focus is more on the relationship between Alex and Ada than anything!

Amulet (Volumes 1-7) by Kazu Kibuishi

This is more of a Middle Grade graphic novel series but one I personally enjoyed and think teens and adults alike can enjoy as well. It’s about two kids who go to rescue their mother from a monster in a secret underground world filled with robots, demons, and talking animals. It’s such a magical series and the characters are so endearing and wonderful, not to mention the story itself is completely enthralling! I can say the characters are all easily my favorite part of this series, they’re all precious cinnamon rolls that must be protected at all costs!

I recommend this series to anyone looking for a fun, magical, fantasy graphic novel series!

Through The Woods by Emily Carroll

This is a pretty unique graphic novel in my opinion as it’s a standalone horror anthology. There are 5 short, creepy stories compiled in this graphic novel and all are beautifully illustrated as well as giving you some suspenseful “quiet” scares. I definitely recommend checking this one out if you’re a horror fan or if you’re looking for a quick scare!

Saga (Volumes 1-8) by Brian K. Vaughan

I feel like I shouldn’t even recommend this because it’s already very popular but I’m going to do it anyways! I will say I wasn’t drawn in by the first two volumes but I decided to give the others a try and was completely hooked, so if you didn’t enjoy volume one or two either I recommend giving the series another go and you may be surprised like I was! It’s about two characters from opposite sides (and races) of a galactic war who fall in love, have a child, and are thus hunted by many different characters who will do anything to ensure people that there can be no peace between the two races.

I recommend this series for fantasy and sci-fi fans alike because there are elements of both present in Saga, but really I recommend this series to everyone because I truly feel there’s something for everyone in this series! Also you’ll become super attached to the characters too!

Saga was the first graphic novel that I read and I LOVED it and all its weirdness. I am slowly making my way through all of the volumes. I am hoping to pick up Paper Girls next. It looks awesome!

Through the Woods is one of my favourite graphic novels! I love how creepy and beautiful the illustrations in it are. I especially enjoy rereading it during Halloween, it just seems fitting plus it’s a short read. 😉
I read the first volume of Pretty Deadly a few years ago and while I found the art stunning I didn’t completely get into the story. Mostly because I remember being confused by it. I definitely plan on rereading this graphic novel, to see if I’ll like it more and if I want to continue reading the series.
And obviously Saga is amazing! There is a reason to why it’s so popular. 😀

I’m pretty sure yours was one of the recommendations I had to read it in the first place! It really is an amazing and creepy graphic novel, definitely one of my favorites as well!

I completely understand you on Pretty Deadly, I spent a good chunk of that story confused but at the end I really enjoyed it, hopefully you’ll enjoy it more when you re-read it! 🙂
