Book Recs: Insane Plot Twists

I recently ran a poll on Twitter asking what kind of book recommendation posts you guys would like to see first! I will be doing all three of the options (Tearjerkers, Morally Grey Characters, & this one Insane Plot Twists) but this one did win the poll so I’ll do it first. Basically the following books all had me like:

The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas

At this point I honestly just recommend anything written by Kara Thomas as she ALWAYS has great plot twists! However, “The Darkest Corners” just really hit me hard while reading I couldn’t have predicted that ending if I tried. This is a very dark, twisted YA psychological thriller in which a teen girl returns to her hometown after many years when a tragic event occurred: her babysitter was murdered and her and her friend haven’t ever discussed what happened that night. She starts digging up secrets from the past and turns out she’s getting closer to a real killer.

There are actually a lot of minute details that you have to keep track of in order to get the big picture at the end, when the real shocks come into play! I thought this was a lot of fun but I could see it potentially confusing or losing other readers. Still, I thought the attention to detail was fantastic and I highly recommend it to any mystery/thriller fans!

Golden Son (Red Rising #2) by Pierce Brown

I actually really recommend the Red Rising Trilogy period because every single book is FILLED with insane plot twists but I have to say the second book “Golden Son” is about the best when it comes to being shocked. There’s so many twists and turns it feels like you’re being torn in two, and that cliffhanger ending will probably kill you. Make sure to have “Morning Star” on hand before finishing, trust me.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

This book! THIS! BOOK! This is a YA fantasy with a very Roman-esque world that’s also filled with some magic and Middle Eastern mythology, it’s also very fast paced and packed with action. Plus of course some plot twists: betrayals, secrets, politics, you name it! This book is very brutal though and its characters are constantly in danger of death, violence and even sexual assault so it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

I’m pretty sure “The Diabolic” is so packed with twists that you couldn’t fit even ONE more in its pages, same applies to the sequel! I will say it requires a bit of patience at the start though, I promise once you get past the first few chapters things pick up to a break-neck speed. This is a YA sci-fi about Nemesis, a Diabolic, who was created in order to protect a Senator’s daughter and to do so she must impersonate her at the Galactic Senate.

Nemesis, the MC, is an absolute ruthless badass and there’s just so much development and complexity here! And the plot twists? Pretty jaw-dropping, there’s conspiracies, politics, mind games, betrayals, and revenge. You pretty much can’t be bored while reading this one!

Illuminae by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman

While reading this book and even after I finished I could not stop thinking about it, it was just an incredible ride! It’s a YA space opera about a group of ships fleeing towards help from their invaded planet. It might not sound like much but trust me it’s very fast paced and there’s constant action! Plus those plot twists I promised: space battles, insane AIs, creepy mutating space viruses, and space government conspiracies. So much going on! Plus it’s got that super unique formatting going for it as well.

Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff

An Asian inspired steampunk fantasy a corrupt land and a young woman who has the gift to hear animal’s thoughts goes on a mission with her father to capture a legendary creature, a thunder tiger, for the Shogun. She ends up stranded with the wounded thunder tiger and together they while rise up against the Empire.

So. Many. Twists. I’m pretty sure my jaw hung open the entire time I was reading. I was just a little raging ball of emotion. The twists will definitely shock you: plenty of betrayals and secrets to go around! Also there’s a thunder tiger whose thoughts we can “hear”, talking animal companions anyone? Also a super badass heroine and their friendship was just heart warming.

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

This one probably won’t be for everyone since it’s horror and it also happens to be a bit slowly paced in the beginning. It takes place in the 1800’s out on the prairie in an abandoned, blood stained cabin where a family moves. Strange and terrifying things proceed to happen and there’s one hell of a twist ending!

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I could not stop turning pages in this one, so addictive, and so good! It’s about two former college roommates who do an experiment with near death experiences and develop powers. 10 years later Victor breaks out of jail and is determined to stop Eli who is on his own mission to eradicate all other super powered people.

So suspenseful and fast paced, it felt like there was a miniature cliffhanger at the end of every chapter! So many twists! This book will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!
